Muslims question about martyrdom sincere answers requested.?

OK, the motivation for martrydom to SOME muslim in the modern era is to ensure thier place in paradise. Martrydom in Christianity is for people that die serving God or preserving thier faith without harming others. This seems to be the original meaning in Islam. Islams 1st martyr was an old woman Sumayyah binte Khabbab who died rather than give up her faith. As I understand it, martrydom is not mentioned in the koran only Hadiths...is this true? The modern concept of martrydom seems to have expanded as are result of the Palestinia struggle to include those that not only die for their faith and thus God but those that kill themselves and others.
What I want to know is what your understanding of martrydom in Islam is truly.

Also, it seems that today the more expansive concept of martyrs has become more common. Do you fear for the Islamic world when the 1st response to wrong is so often suicide killings? And do you use your place when you kill other muslims in Gods name?

I'm a Christian, but I have read the Quran out of curiosity.

In slightly more detail, Muslims believe that they cannot really know whether or not they go to heaven. All they can do is follow the teachings of the Quran as closely as possible, and hope that their good works exceed their sins. Additionally, they believe in predestination, meaning that everything that has happened, and everything that will happen has already been determined by Allah, and they are merely 'along for the ride', to paraphrase.

However - there is ONE way for them to be sure of going to heaven. This way is to die in 'jihad,' which means that they die defending Islam. For example, the Quran states that anyone who insults Islam must be killed. If a Muslim hears someone insult Islam and kills this person in a suicide bombing, they have died in jihad, and will immediately be granted a spot in heaven. That is the Muslim concept of martyrdom.

Christianity, on the other hand, states that if you die in the name of God, you will recieve salvation. If you kill another person, for any reason, in the name of God, you have sinned, and may or may not go to heaven.

For example, if a gunman was walking down a lineup of people, and asking them one by one: "Do you believe that Jesus is Lord?", and shooting those who replied 'yes,' all those who did reply 'yes' were martyrs.

If I killed a Muslim in the name of God, I would not be a martyr. I would be a murderer, and would definitely NOT be rewarded for such an act. Despite what may have happened in the past, Christianity does not endorse the killing of anyone, regardless of religion.

God does NOT want any Muslims killed in his name (nor is it possible to do so). It doesn't matter if I killed Mother Theresa or Osama bin Laden - it would be just as wrong either way, and neither would be 'martyrdom'.

To die as a martyr you die for your religion. True. But, what some of the radical muslins don't realize is that by killing others they are not dying for their religion, but simply defying its doctorins. The Koran is a peaceful book that tell about being rational about everything. But, radicals use the Koran to twist its words into weapons and brainwash the young and naive. The Koran is a good book to live your life by, but as usually people mess up everything.

Chelle Belle, I am a Christian, and although I dont have all the answers I would like to help you. I have read much of the Koran and I do not see suicide killing mentioned. Christian martyrs never kill anyone. They are killed for their faith. Rather than deny Jesus Christ as Lord they choose death. The killing of innocent people is at no time acceptable for the God I worship. My God's name is Jehovah, YHWH ,or Yahweh. His son is Jesus Christ. He is not the same god as Allah. Jehovah God is a God of love. These jihadists of your religion are only fooling themselves by thinking they will get into heaven by killing innocent people and themselves by suicide bombing. They will not attain paradise or 70 virgins. They will attain only death, hell and eternal punishment. Think about it. How can murdering innocent people like 9/11 or the daily missiles being shot at innocent people in Israel be counted as a righteous act? It makes no sense whatsoever. I ask you very respectfully to try praying to Jehovah God and ask him to reveal himself to you. When you are finished praying to Jehovah God say this" I ask this in Jesus' name ,amen" at the end of your prayer. If you truly seek God with all your heart, He will answer your prayer and reveal himself to you in some way. Many Muslim to Christian converts have seen Jesus in person.
