To believe in Him at every moment of decision. 'Picking up our crosses daily' tells us that we must 'die' daily. I don't think it is meant as a 'magical' means by which we are saved. As in, "Just believe and everything is gonna be alright".

A 'Believer' should be turning the world upside down. Think about it. Can someone believe too much? We are limited in our believing by our own shortcomings. But He has given us the power to completely trust in Him. "For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him". (IIChronicles 16:9)

First off it's not believe it's believeth. It's a trilogy thing you know "father son and holy ghost". It's supposed to be a mystery of the number three. another seemingly unsolvable mystery. It means to the faithful that they will support and place above themselves the messengers, gods priests monks nuns evangelists etc.. So in this instance I'd say believe/believeth mean a loss of freedom.

Ephesians 3:17-19 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. (NLT) 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (NIV)

If we interpret the term in the light of the whole of scripture, we find that it means: we must believe that we are sinners and that without Jesus' atonement for our sins we would come under the condemnation of the Law. We believe that Jesus secured our salvation on Calvary. We believe that he was who he said he was--the Gospel of John emphasizing His divinity and union with God the Father.

Furthermore, we act in way that demonstrates this belief and that shows that we have made Him Lord of our life because the Bible says that our faith is an empty shell without a changed life. It also commands us to be doers of the word and not hearers only and to have love for one another. These things we do if we truly believe and these are the defining characteristics of disciples of Jesus.

It's far more than an intellectual assent, as could be said of believing that something exists. To believe in someone (especially in this context) is to trust in, rely upon, and depend upon that person. The aspect of commitment is implied in the original Greek. To believe in Jesus is to commit to and enjoy a covenant relationship with Him.

A person repents (does a 180 from there sin) and ask Jesus to forgive as they confess their sin and need for forgiveness. They accept that Jesus is their redeemer and Lord of their life.
The new believer believes that Jesus has forgiven him. The new believer now has eternal life with Jesus (this is what believing is).

(John 8:31-46; Acts 8:13-24; James 2;14-26) Mere asset to God's truth is not saving faith. Niether is total commitment of oneself to Jesus as Lord a form of saving faith. Such a view places too much emphasis on the act of belief, as opposed to the object of belief-Jesus Christ. A belief that saves is one that rests in the finished work of Christ; it trusts God alone for salvation (John 3:16). Believers are those that trust God with will as well as their mind. To place one' trust in God's truth; One who takes God at His word and trusts in Him for salvation. With all your mind, soul and body; you trust and belief that Jesus Christ, which was the son of God; whom was crucified on the cross for our sins and rose up out of a grave on the third day.

The Greek word "Pisteuo" is the underlying root. (That bit of information is not really important for someone to know, but it is included so you can look and verify for yourself the information I include later.) Here is its definition:

to believe, put one's faith in, trust, with an implication that actions based on that trust may follow; (pass.) entrust

Notice this is a verb. Not only that, by definition, it presumes that actions will be done based on itself.

... The English definition is virtually meaningless since the document was originally written in Greek, our concern SHOULD BE "What did this writer mean by _____ ?" -- which takes us not to an English language dictionary, but one for the language it which it was written.

"believe" means more than to simply acknowledge; James tells us that even the devils believe and tremble and we know that they are not saved.

It means to "commit to" or "put trust in"

Only those who bear good fruit have such a belief that is acceptable to God.

THE AXE HAS BEEN LAID

Luke 3:9 - And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

verb: "follow a credo; have a faith; be a believer."

(so my question would be: How does one "think" in his head that something is true, and yet refuse to "follow teachings" and still call himself a "believer"?)

So often people misinterpret "believing in Jesus" as simply accepting that he is in fact who he says he is --- but not actively 'follow teachings' (To me, that's only acknowledging his existance.)

"If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love." John 15:10

"Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." John 14:21
