R dogs really allergic to chocolate???

Question

I know that ppl say chocolate will kill dogs if u feed it to them...but a little won't i know cuz my brother gave chocolate to out dog.....anyways when he did i thought of this question...does any1 know the exzact reason why or what causes them to be allergic to it????

It's not about allergies. It is about the theobromine in chocolate which is sort of like caffeine and in enough of an amount for a dog depending on the individual dog and the weight and size, chocolate can kill a dog. My 125 lb GSD got ahold of a bag of chocolate miniature candy bars one Easter and ate the whole thing! I thought she would die but my Vet said she would likely be fine, maybe a little diarrhea. She was fine. He said had she been a smaller dog and eaten that amount or if she had eaten BAKER'S CHOCOLATE he would have been concerned.
That is because Baker's Chocolate has the most Theobromine in it. Dark chocolate has more theobromine in it than milk chocolate.
A friend with a small breed dog lost her dog last Christmas when her dog got ahold of about eight wrapped dark chocolates.
So yes, it can kill because of that substance in it. For the sake of the dog, avoid chocolate in the future. If that had been "a little" Baker's chocolate that your dog ate, it may have killed your dog.

Not all dogs are allergic to chocolate. About 25% of dogs are not allergic, but are allergic if they have like 5lbs are a large amount like that. Same thing for raisons and other things. Some breeds that are usually not allergic to chocolate include:
Shephards
Border Collies
Some Terriers
Shelties

Dogs are not very allergic to chocolate. If you have a little dog, like under 20 pounds, i wouldnt suggest giving it chocolate. They may not die.. but they could get sick , throw up or just not be thier selves.
Bigger dogs though , are ok with small amounts of chocolate, but dont be giving them whole chocolate bars and stuff....

YES! Dogs are allergic to chocolate but the big concern is with semi-sweet, unsweetened or dark chocolate because they are much more concentrated than milk chocolate which is diluted with milk. While milk chocolate doesn't present a major problem, it's a really good idea never to give dogs chocolate.

Dogs aren't allergic to chocolate. But, they can very sick (close to death), if they eat lots of chocolate. No, a small piece of chocolate won't kill, or make a dog sick, but, still, feeding your dog chocolate is not smart. Once a dog get used to even just one small piece of chocolate, they want more, and this can become a very bad behavioral problem. Begging. And then you feel bad for your dog, so you give him more chocolate. And then, comes the death scene. So, over all, feeding your dog chocolate is not safe for the dog. Please, don't feed your dog chocolate.

They're not allergic--they just die from it, because a human and a dog's stomachs are completely different. Example: Why are some dog's tongue black, and why do we have tastebuds? As you can see, the world can't be the same, it'll be boring, or else everyone will be shy, so the world will be quiet, or we're all outgoing, so there;ll be war and another 9/11 happening every minute of the day.

Chocolate can cause a dog to get very sick.
vomiting
panting
increased or decreased heart rate
muscle tremors
diarrhea
ataxia
seizures
coma
death
That's what can happen to a dog if they eat chocolate.
The amount of chocolate that can do that is 45mg per pound of body weight.
Reported deaths have been with 52 mgs per pound of body weight and that is from Theobromine.

It's not an allergy, it's that chocolate contains a substance that is toxic to dogs, so it can make them sick and even kill them. The substance is called theobromine. Whether or not your dog gets sick will depend on how big your dog is, what kind of chocolate it was, how much it ate, and can just also depend on the individual dog.

In general, white chocolate won't hurt them (or rather, it takes a heck of a lot). It will take an ounce of milk chocolate per pound of your dog's body weight to get to a toxic level, 1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for semisweet chocolate, and 1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for baker's chocolate/dark chocolate. Cocoa is somewhere less toxic than dark chocolate but more toxic than semisweet, I believe.

So if your dog is 50 pounds, it will likely take roughly 50 a little over 3 pounds of milk chocolate, or around 1 pound of semi sweet chocolate, or less than half a pound of baker's chocolate to poison it.

That doesn't mean you should go around giving smaller amounts to the dog -- not good to get in a habit of giving it to them. Even if they don't get it in toxic levels it's still not *good* for them.
