Hi! I got my expander when I was 12 and you will get totally used to it. I was panicing, too... crying is more like it. Anyways, you will get used to talking in about a week. However, you will not be able to fully say some words. Ex. ' E ' is kinda hard to say. Don't worry, people hardly ever notice. Swallowing will get better within 1 or 2 days, swallowing will get to go back to normal. Chewing, I'd say 2 or 3 days. Chewing is probably the hardest but in the end, you will be wondering why you were panicing. Oh, and you will learn how to use your tounge to pop things out of the expander like food. Trust me, if I can do it, you can do it! Good Luck!!!

Oh, and when you get it off... it is like heaven.

They are really uncomfortable, but your mouth will learn to work around it and 4 - 8 months isn't soo long...once you get all the orthodontia done and see the before and after results you will be very happy you went through the awkwardness of the expander.
