I would down load spybot/ad aware/avg/ & ccleaner as a good starting point. Make sure that these are updated after you install them and then run them. Defragmenting your computer about once a month also helps.
These are some basic things that you can do to keep your computer in shape for free.
Before I run these programs however I would go through and decide what software that I use or really want and get rid of the rest via add remove programs in the control panel

Yes and if you are running XP it is already on your computer.
Go to Start/ All Programs/ Accessories/System Tools and choose Disk Cleanup, Check all of the Boxes and then Clean it.
Next if you are using Internet Explorer, open it then select Tools and then Internet Options, this will allow you to clean all of the storage of Cookies, and all of the other unneccesary junk from going out in Cyberspace.
Next I would Download Lavasofts, Adaware it will let you clean even more and also Spybot's Search and Destroy all are Shareware or Free and each does similar but a little different functions that will allow you to clean her up.

control panel add/remove or if it's a file not in there, see if it has an unistall option. if the file doesn't install when ran right click and delete.
there is no program that's gonna tell you what you need or don't need far as file's and program's go.
