A wire brush on a hot grill works great.

I have four outdoor BBQ grills, but only use one of them. When I want to use it,....I use a brass grill brush, and brush off all the residue from the grates. Then when I light the briquettes, I let it burn a few minutes to kill the bacteria.
To prevent a greasy smell and taste, I wrap the meat in aluminum foil, until the meat is about half done, then unwrap the meat and push it onto the grates....when almost done, I add a little BBQ sauce/ketchup/Diet Coke mixture and let it finish cooking.
The problem is...there is never any leftovers... just yummy

I love cooking on the grill. I've found out that leaving the grill dirty from the previous barbecue leaves a grease scent which I like. I do clean it with an onion. Once the grill is hot, scrub the onion on the grill. I take it you are cooking outdoors. The second purpose of the onion is to make the neighbors envious. It smells so gooooood !!!!
Try leaving the charcoal ash form the previous barbecue as well.

I use one of those brass bbq brush's on it while heating up.
I worked in "charcoal" grilled steak place, they cleaned their grill at the end of every night at the end of evening with a wire brush too. Like a good cast iron skillet you want it to season and develop some character.

i use my grill for work (private chef) i never actually clean it. all i do is drop the cooking grate on a hard surface before using it again to knock off any chunks. that is all it needs. the residue keeps food from sticking and doesnt afect the food. if you put the grate on 5 minutes before the food the grate is hot enough to kill any bacteria. if you scratch the coating it will increase the risk of rusting.

we have a huge grill, and generally I just scrape it when it is warm, but at the beginning and end of the summer season I take it apart and spray it all down with easy off for ovens/grills....let it sit for a hour or two and then scrub...comes nice and clean.

Yes. We use something that scratches. You can buy all kinds of grill scrapers at just about all stores now.
After I scrape, I take a damp rag and clean it good on the top and the bottom.

Before I use my grill each time, I turn the burners up to high for about 10 minutes. It burns off any left over food residue and then it's good to go.

the best thing you can do is take a clean wire bbq grill brush and scrub it good, then light the thing up and let all the residue burn off and you will burn away the icky stuff and bacteria...also, you can use scrunched up foil as a scrubber if you dont have a brush....whens dinner?

I clean my grill right after I take the food off while it's still hot.
it's very easy to clean then.Just take a bbq brush and scrape everything off.
It's ready for next time and takes only a couple minutes.
