This is totaly not normal, unless you have an 80 or more gig HardDrive and you are on Dial-up then it could take several hours to scan. .
If you have let your virus definitions lapse and you have not paid the yearly fee then it sounds more like your issue.
Some of them have a nasty hbit of corupting certian things on your computer if this happens, in an attempt to get you to renew and get that money again.
I am sorry to say that this didn't used to be the case a few years back but to date 2 things have happened.
Peter Norton sold his company to Symantec, and things have gone downhill ever since.
2nd McAfee has moved all of it's support to India and I shouldn't have to say more there another Joke.
If I were you I would try to UnInstall your Virus Software nad check with your Internet Service Provider many are now offering Free Internet Security Suite's that are offered by CA or another reputable company, simply for using there service.
I will also say that I have been running CA which is short for Computer Associates that is offered by SBC Yahoo since they started offering it and I have never had any issues at all it is very very good, and like I said it is free, just for being there customer. There are others out there of course, that are as good, But you do need to either UnInstall what you have now and or contact there support and see what they say, and Good Luck.
