I would start giving him water before bedtime to start with its a lot easier on the tummy and the teeth. Maybe try a song, like "Good morning, good morning, good morning and how are you?" type song that gets him focused on something other then wanting to cry or be fussy. Hope this helps a little at least =) Good luck

I'm a nanny for a 19 month old and up until a few weeks ago she was waking up really fussy too. Her mom and dad are both dentists but I'm the one who found her very swollen gums.

She was fussy for nearly 3 months from pain from her teeth coming in. We started to give her Tylenol and teething tablets to help but I hear that teething is very painful and causes random fussy times.

She ended up cutting 4 teeth just last week...so the pain will begin several months before you actually see the teeth.

I say just be patient...take good care.

Check to make sure the temperature in his room is comfortable (and he's not overdressed and covered with to many blankets), sometimes if a baby is to hot they wake up fussing. Also, listen to his breathing at night when he's sleeping, if he sounds congested he may have an allergy that causes a breathing problem. (My friends son woke up fussy all the time until they found out he had severe hay fever, now that he's taking allergy medicine he's perfectly happy when he wakes up.)

Try putting a leak-proof sippy cup filled with water in or near crib, so he can have a drink as soon as he wakes up.
My second son did this until I figured out he was really, really thirsty.
Also, is he really wet? Maybe he's uncomfortable - cut back on size of bedtime drink, or change to water instead?
Is he really, really hungry? Give him a few cheerios to snack on while you change diaper or clothes.
Good Luck!
