Whats the BEST way to cut Bunker? I want to go fishing and want to know before I go next time. I always take bunker but for some reason my technique for cutting it is no good. The bunker just gets slimy and doesn't stay on the hook. What am I doing wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

bunker or pogies are menhaden for the first guy...their a popular salt water bait....what I do is cast net them and fish them alive....I bait them right through the mouth...they are excellent flounder bait and red drum or speckled trout or any coastal inshore fish

Once you buy the bunker, you want to cut the head off as soon as possible and remove the guts. The guts over several hours will make the bunker mushy. After you cut the head off you could cut the rest of the bunker into four to six pieces. If I have not much time, I cut into four. If I have time, I cut into six pieces. Also it's good to salt them up if you can. That way they stay longer on the hook. As far as the head, I use it last when I'm fishing for stripers. A striper has to be over 15 lbs to take a bunker head.

One thing that you have to remember about bunker is that it is extremely oily and that will degrade the flesh quicker. I cut it into chunks across the body ( assuming frozen) and remove the guts. The heads are good for chum or crab traps. If your fisshing for blues, I preferred using Mackeral bellies. Very shiny and wear better.

You don't really have to cut them. Grab them hard enough and hook it through its mouth. People also say that hooking it through its back(not too deep) and making it come out of the back helps it stay alive so it swims abit in the water and attracts other fish.
