I asked this in the health section too, but I'm not getting many answers. My 9 y/o daughter has severe asthma. This time of year it gets really bad. She is on Advair 2 times a day, Singulair once a day, Claritin once a day, Albuterol inhaler when needed, and an Albuterol Nebulizer 2 times a day. After all that she still has a lot of trouble off and on. Does anyone know any home remedies like I know coffee is supposed to help but it's hard to get her to drink it while it's hot like she's supposed to. I know obviously to take her to the ER when it's really bad, but if I can take care of it at home I want to try, b/c we have no insurance and her meds alone are 400.00 per month. Thanks for any ideas that work!

We can't afford to move b/c of her meds being so expensive. We can't get rid of the carpet b/c we rent. the house is dusted and vaccumed everyday. Carpets steamed once a month. We have a Chihuahua. I can't stop medicating her. I did once and she almost died of an attack outside when I wasn't there. I am interested in the disability social security though if it can get her on medicaid. I'm not one to mooch of the govmnt but we can barely afford to pay our bills b/c of these meds.

By the way, the chihuahua does work, only be sure that the dog is the opposite sex of the person who is in need of the chihuahua.

We had one for my brother and she would sleep with us, her head on a pillow just like we did. Whenever C would get ill and his was really bad, the dog, Blonde would get sick and then he'd be alright, the dog would soon be better, she lived to a ripe old age for a dog.

Well, moving to a different place sometimes helps if the asthma is being triggered by environmental factors, and cleaning up the diet is helpful long term. Less meat and milk, more vegetables and water.

But this is a long term illness, unfortunately, and your daughter will probably need drugs to treat it. Moving to a country where health care is decent and cheap should not be ruled out. Canada might be possible. Thailand might be possible. I'm sure there are other choices as well.

I know such a move seems impossible, but many people manage it without spending that much. In Thailand, there are jobs teaching English. They don't pay much, but things don't cost much. I don't know that much about Canada, but Canadians I know say the health care is good enough for illnesses that just require certain drugs. They say it's not so good for other types of illnesses. Good luck, in any case!

Even after I tell you this, Keep a close eye on her.

I had asthma as a child, my son has asthma. I grew out of it believing I could beat it. I played all sports, I think in todays world the doctors are telling this to more and more people. Almost as an excuse. My son they said has asthma, I do not let it get to him. Yes, I carry an inhaler, Have the nebulizer, all the good stuff. He runs around get winded but I do not let him use his asthma as a crutch. When I realize he needs some help I give it to him only then. My boy is 6.
Use your best judgment, let the kid run and play. try to go longer between the meds. You will eventually be able to take her off of them all together. Watch her closely. Her body will react to things differently. so ease her off and see if this helps. Make her run and excersize. Meds are there if you need them Do not be afraid. Last time my boy used his meds were last year.

My mom always believed in an old wives tale. Basically if you have a chihuahua the dog takes the asthma away from the child and has it instead. It actually worked on my sister. She had horrible asthma as a child and couldn't really participate in anything because of it. She got a puppy (not just for asthma for all you PETA people) and she hasn't had a problem with it since. I know it sounds crazy but it's just what I've always believed.

asthma is very different for certain ppl. I have asthma and use advair day and night and use my albuterol when i need it and my mom bought me the machine that they use in the hospital for asthma the nebulizer with the saline solution which is what i use instead of going to the e.r now when it get's really bad which it hasn't in a long time, as far as home remideis i don't know of any other than relaxing and deep breaths in the nose out the mouth if it get's really bad with all the meds your on i would just go to the doctor you have severe asthma and will need medical attention nothing at home will help you if you get that bad don't take any chances.

well there is one thing daughter has to learn and on her own which is how to calm done during the attack. I have asthma and this is hard but if you get upset your chest gets tighter. Also maybe your house has to many allergens, pets, carpet (carpet is really bad for asthmatic hardwood is much better) Get frebreeze allergen reducer and spray your carpet, sofa curtains etc. I say this because she seems to have allergy induce asthma like i do since she is on singular and claritin. Also if you can keep your windows clothes and run the air that will help. When she has an attack if it is on the border of being bad take her to the car turn it on and run the air put her in the front seat the air does something to help. Keep your house clean (you may say it is clean) but keep the dust away clean like every day especially her room. but not when she is home that will help with the allergens to. Change your pillows every six months get hypo allergenic you can get some nice ones at target for 5 dollars.make sure she takes her meds and not just told you she did all of this will help

My brother is an asthmatic and after ten years his asthma has shown no sign of improving. He has been to several doctors but they didn't help much.

If you want a proven, all-natural way to cure your asthma, without having to pay for useless medications with harmful side-effects, then this is the most important page you'll ever read.

I have severe asthma as well, and in my experience cold helps more than heat. Try an iced coffee drink or a caffeinated soda. Chocolate helps me. Try chocolate ice cream or even a piece of frozen chocolate. I keep some in the freezer for this reason. Breathe easy tea by Traditional Medicinals helps as well, but I'd check with her doctor to make sure it would be safe with her medicines. Grapes also help for some reason. Good luck.

It wouldn't hurt to try what I do for Croupe.......turn the shower on HOT go out and close the door. After 5 minutes, take her in the bathroom and sit in there with her. Same idea as coffee, it's the moisture and heat.

Good Luck

p.s. have you tried to google asthma home remedies

truthfully, instead of coffee try like a Coke or some sort of caffeinated/sugar filled soda. It helps stimulate the body and can help breathing.

I have asthma and this does work for me sometimes.
