If it starts up again after it cools off I'd say it's the TFI (Thick Film Ignition circuit). When they go bad that's usually what happens. It's connected to the distributor either directly or it will be remote mounted on the fender.

Certain ford trucks have faulty fuel injection systems. Getting hot and shutting off could also be your water pump. You need to check with a qualified ford mechanic and see exactly what it is. There may even be a recall for your truck. needless to say you don't want it to catch on fire.
