1) ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings wherever you are. Stay alert for trouble if you are traveling alone, or with another woman.
2) Don't talk to strange men, no matter how nice they seem or how handsome they are. Some have been the worst offenders to women.
3) Park your car near activity, rather than off by itself. And before you open the door, look into the back seat if it is at night.
4) Whenever you read about something via email forwarded from a friend with a warning to be wary of some new scheme that can get you abducted or some crazy story, go to snopes.com to check it out. Most of this stuff has been circulating on the internet for years and they are not true.
5) Try to stay in a crowd of people waiting for a bus, or if you see someone looking at you strangely and you are about to get off a bus and he is, too, don't get off, etc. These are all just self-preservation tactics.
I'm not trying to scare you, I think that for the most part, there aren't nearly the amount of predators that our news stations would like us to believe. But if you walk with confidence. look like you know where you are going and wouldn't be an easy target, you won't be bothered. Remember that a mugger or purse snatcher is looking for an easy mark, not a difficult one.
Good luck! You are smart to ask!

Your local police dept may have a web site with a map showing where various crimes happen, like rape, mugging, etc. so you know to what degree you are at risk, compared to overall community.
The FBI has crime statistics for the nation, so you can compare your city to other cities.
There are various weapons for self-protection, such as walking stick, hat pin, mace, pepper spray, etc. and many of them have some legal limitations for buying, using ... attend a class in self-defense tactics. If you get a gun, go to a gun range and learn how to use it properly, and how to store it so kids not get at it.
A home can have double layers of doors, locks, can have an alarm system.
Your car can have a variety of protections.
In my experience, the best defense is to go live in a community that has a low crime rate.
When I lived in Cincinnati Ohio, my apartment was broken into once every few months ... it got expensive to replace my stuff, and repair where they broke in. From time to time when I left my apartment to go to work & the car wouldn't start, it was because someone had got underneath to get the latch to open the hood, help themselves to something like the battery, then close it up again ... get service station garage help and come to find out same thing happened to scores of my neighbors.
I move to another city & that stuff never happens.
Of course then there is other kinds of stuff like car wars and highway boobytraps.
There are cities whose crime rate is so low that they have to make up what some people think are silly rules ... like where I now live there is a law against playing the music in your car so loud that with the windows open it can be heard by the people in the next car.
Plus to try to put a stop to cruising, there is a law that if you pass the same place on the highway more than 3 times in an hour, you can get a ticket ... so if you go shopping, then you half way home and remember you forgot something, you need to drive a different way, to avoid in trouble with the cruising law.
There are communities with crime rates so low that you can leave your doors and windows open, leave stuff in your yard, and nothing gets stolen.
At that point, your only worry is whether motorists can see you Ok when you are a pedestrian.

Any weapon in the hands of somebody not trained to use it usually ends up being used against them. So give that up.
Don't go anywhere alone, is possible, especially after dark. Walk only in well lit areas, no alleys or dark streets. Walk like you have somewhere to go, don't just mosey along with your head down. Most importantly, be aware of your surroundings. If you think you're being followed, head for someplace where there are a lot of people.

What part of the country? Awareness of people around you is first thing. Then the best defense is a strong ability to defend your self. Learn moves to free your self from a attacker. Then draw down with your hidden hand gun and kill the person trying to steal from you! No hesitation! no rationalization no bargaining no excuses! Some one was coming at me I told them to stop they did not stop I pulled my licensed hand gun and fired they did not stop and shot again...Not stopped shot and shot not stopped reloaded and then they stopped !
Sounds harsh there are people who will move the crime to another location where they have control and you will never be seen again.

I WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU TAKE EXTREME CAUTION IN WHATEVER YOU DO TO BEGIN WITH.
I WOULD ALSO SUGGEST THAT YOU CONTACT YOUR LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT BECAUSE THEY WILL BE ABLE TO ANSWER ANY AND ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS.
