I see so many people on here that say global warming is a hoax and that the rising temperature has nothing to do with us humans. I would like to hear some background on why they think this way, and what they think really is causing this gradual increase in temperature.

There are two truths about global warming:

if no one was looking for it, no one would know it exists. They only know about it because they have been told about it. To date, there are no deleterious effects from GW that can be responsibly attributed to man.

the "disastrous consequences" of global warming exist ONLY in computer models, which despite any claims to the contrary, have NOT stood up to any scrutiny outside the clique of those whose livelihood depends on it. It is also well-established that these models have not taken all significant parameters into account.

So, let me flip it on you:
How can you believe in something that you cannot perceive and exists solely in an unverifiable computer model?

I'll stick with reality until you can show me SOMETHING real.

There are many theories out there. Some people think that Global Warming is a natural phase of the earth, like the ice age. Another theory is that global warming is natural just like geological events are natural. The last theory I've heard of, is that global warming is, philosophically, something that the mind perceives but is not an actuality. This theory gets me the most, because even though there is empirical evidence that suggests global warming, that evidence can also be refuted by inferring on what grounds that argument of the evidence presented is sound. If I were to tell you that a few numbers (degree changes) in temperature is responsible for all the changes you see in weather, you might be skeptical, or you might believe it. That's how some people perceive the argument. It can also be said that a person may need a background on some fundamental knowledge of science before they can begin to understand what the evidence is suggesting about global warming.

I'm not saying that there isn't global warming, but I have seen absolutely no evidence that it is caused by human activity. Now, this DOES NOT MEAN THAT I ADVOCATE POLLUTING THE EARTH! We should recycle as much as possible, pollute as little as absolutely necessary, and respect the land.

The only thing we know for sure about the climate is that is always changing! Recent reports from NASA shows that the Martian poles are losing ice as well. This points to a solar cause for warming.

The main argument for or against global warming is what it is caused by, not that it is happening. I for one cannot believe anything that Al Gore says because he is a politician! It truly amazes me that people believe anything he says! He is a professional liar (AKA Politician!!!)!

Weather changes, species come and go, land changes. That is the way of things, and that is the way it always will be. Hey guess what! You could reduce pollution to zero, plant billions of trees, and the climate will still change over time.

There has been global warming and cooling throughout the entire history of the earth. We did not invent or cause it. One eruption of a volcano can put more CO2 into the atmosphere than man has done since we've been here. Ever hear a scientist or environmental extremist complain about how volcano's are going to kill us or lead to global warming? A much greater problem is going to be global cooling. Think of the energy use that is going to cause. And the food shortages. Global warming is nothing compared to cooling. We were told in the 70's that global cooling was coming. For sure. All the nimrod scientists agreed. Learn to relax. Remember the guys on the corner with the sign that said "Repent, the end is near?" This is the same thing, different day.

I know. It makes me mad when people just deny the problem and act like that's a good, right thing to do. I think most people now believe in global warming. Most people only debate over the cause. However, there are some people who still hold onto the belief that global warming doesn't even exist thanks to idiots like Thomas Sowell who think that they always know better than the experts who have a degree in the subject and have studied it for years. But of course those experts just stupid, how could you possibly believe something like that, no matter how much of their life they've devoted to the subject. But, sadly, people people do always think they know better than everyone else.

I personally believe that global warming is caused by us. To me it's just common sense that tons and tons of pollution pumped out into the atmosphere and the waterways and the ground every week would have a negative effect on the earth. I respect the opinions of people who have a rational argument, but when they totally dismiss all the real evidence just because...well for whatever reason the do it, I just find them to be ridiculous.

I believe in global warming, but my parents don't. I've listened to my dad talk about it without trying to persuade him to the other side. And the insight I've gotten is that people really don't understand 2 basic principals of global warming.

1) there is a natural warming cycle for the earth, but it has been exaggerated by human lifestyles.

2) just because the earth is warming doesn't mean temperatures are going to be hotter where they live. It could mean it's cooler, more rain, etc. because global currents (like the gulf stream) which control weather patterns are shifting and warmer air is being moved away from where they are.

Another arguement I've heard is that God promised in the bible he wouldn't destroy the earth after Noah. God actually promised not to destroy the earth by flood. There are many other ways he could eliminate the population of earth without a flood. I think that comes from the idea that the result of global warming is going to be a flood from the melting of the ice caps.

You can't decide science by popular opinion pools, even among scientists.

There was a time when the great scientists of the world could not understand how people can actually buy into this belief that the earth was round, without corners or a dead end in the middle of the sea.

I hope this growing evidence of rising temps is over-blown evidence, because almost no one is really changing directions to reverse this trend.

Maybe it's just a lot of lip service, while the "rape" of mother nature contines ... and all over the planet "the beat goes on".

I live in the "frozen north" of Canada. Florida eat your heart out. If the planet heats up, you'll want to buy land here!!!

Global warming isn't a hoax, but is not purely caused by mankind. We are pumping co2 etc into the atmosphere, akin to spraying a hose into an Olympic size pool.
This planet has a geological history of climate change and seasons don't just occur during a year.
We are influenced by factors beyond our control, the sun being the biggest, of course, and then there is our orbital variations.
We certainly affect our local climate, ie: regional to cities etc; but we don't influence our climate overall, to any huge effect....yet....
The hoax is more in the political aspect of the issue, parties with agendas, certain persons wanting to score political points, or scare the masses, or just plain power/money games.
Certainly, we need to be careful, we do need to conserve and preserve, but seriously, this seems to be just a bigger Y2K scare.

There have been programs about this in the UK. Do an internet search for "The great global warming swindle" and "The great green smoke screen". One of the strong arguments was that it's to do with changed in the sun. Many other compelling arguments were put forward which i still haven't heard answered or challenged directly by any pro global warming people.

Well the earth was warmer between the two most recent ice ages and obviously was much cooler at different times. Volcanic action will cool the earth quickly. Other planets are showing similar warming trends as well. Humans contribute a mere 1/3 of a percent of ALL greenhouse gases. There is so much evidence and so many scientist that oppose the notion that it is man made. Listen to the authors and contributors of the IPCC reports who state that the summary is a political document written/manipulated by politicians and that it states the opposite of what the actual information in the report states. As nice as it would be for humans to have so much power, the reality is that we are nothing in the grand scheme of things- nothing.
