It is my birthday coming up in a few days, and I would like to ask my dad if I can get a Mosin-Nagant. But I want to know the differnce between the Mosin M91/30, and the Mosin M44 carbine. And, which do you think is better? Could I hunt deer with it?

I would opt for the 91/30 due to the longer barrel and added bullet velocity, nothing wrong with the m44 but that would be my preference. And yes you can hunt deer with it. Its in the same class as a 308 or 30-06. Ammo may be a little difficult to find for hunting, alot of the ammo is FMJ. Wolf gold makes a jacketed soft point. I believe Norma does as well.

the Mosin M44 and M91/30 are the same rifle in terms of the rifle. The only real difference is the M44 is about 10 inches shorter than the M91/30.

The m44 kicks like a dozen mules, it'll knock the teeth outta your skull... really fun to shoot. The difference is the length and the bayonet. The 91/30 is longer and has a detachable, socket bayonet, the m44 is shorter and has a folding bayonet. The 91/30 is longer and a little harder to handle, but the m44 kicks more. Both should take a deer down although the 91/30 is more accurate. It depends what you like? I enjoy rifles with a good kick so I would pick the m44. You might like something gentler so the 91/30 would be a good choice.

Mosing Nagant M44 is a lot shorter than the Mosin Nagant M1891/30. M44 was used primarily in World War II. The M1891 precedes the M44.

m44 is shorter(carbine) version of 91/30. I personally think the m44 looks a little too stubby, but that is just me, and I'm sure I wouldn't mind if I owned one. Both fire the same 7.62X54 round. Other than some cosmetic things like a permanent bayonet and being shorter, I don't think you would be able to notice anything significant performance wise. I'm not sure if a shorter barrel length really hurts the accuracy or velocity very much, but I assume not. Oh and yes, you can definitely hunt with it. I love surplus guns because they are priced so well. I hope you get it.

Go with the rifle for better long range accuracy. Nothing wrong with the carbine; just shorter to carry easier. You can hunt deer or just about anything on the north american continent with it. It is about the same as a rimmed 30-06 or the 8mm mauser round. Have fun.

M44 is generally the most coveted. It is significantly easier to find aftermarket and replacement parts for.As long as it fits the minimum caliber requirements you should be able to hunt with it.I have not used either but from what I hear the range/accuracy decrease is minor with the M44,and it makes up for it with less weight and what I mentioned earlier. Before you go Deer hunting with it you might want to get a scope or at least modify/replace the ironsights to be more suitable for hunting.
