A very good question. It seems that Christianity believes the they can't utilize the original method that was provided so god gave a new method by which to achieve holiness and spirituality.

I need a Savior because I have sinned like everyone else. His forgiveness is the only way I can have a restored relationship with God. I know the way.

They need a savior because they believe that without explicit directions on morality from the tooth fairy, they would develop a set of morals far more decrepit than those developed by the atheists around them, who don't seem to need a tooth fairy to guide their morality.
