With a ruler measure it across the middle (diameter). If it's 8 inches then it's an 8 inch pan.
I'm assuming you are speaking of a round cake pan.
If it's a rectangle or square, then it isn't an 8 inch pan. It's a __ inch by __ inch pan. Measure both sides for such a pan and divide by two to get an approximate of what it would be for a round pan.
Don't listen to people telling you other things. A square pan that measures 8 inches on each side isn't an 8 inch pan,. It's an 8 inch by 8 inch pan.
That person far below me doesn't know what the heck he is talking about. Unless the recipe specifies the shape of the pan it in some manner, then the pan referred to by a single measurement is always considered to be round. A pan that is square whose side is 8 inches can be and is referred to as an 8 inch square pan, but it is never simply an 8 inch pan.

If the pan is round, measure the diameter (from side to side across the middle). If it is square, just measure the length of the side. If it is rectangular, it is not an 8 inch pan.

The baker doesn't know what the heck he is talking about. It is 8 inch square or 8 inch round. You don't call and 8 inch square an 8 by 8 inch pan, unless you are an idiot. Pie tins are called either 8 inch or 9 inch pie. 'Cuz we all know, pie are round. Rectangles are called by the dimensions, 9 by 13, ect. When you get into things like loaf pans you give full dimensions such as 9 by 5 by 2 1/2 inch loaf pan.

Sometimes, it will tell you on the bottom of the pan. Otherwise you will have to measure. Usually an 8" pan is square.

8" pan is usually square. Yes, you can measure with a tape or ruler.
You could also use another pan. Doesn't have to be square !!
