means the dish was made with no prepackage or pre-made store bought conveniences.
For example, a scratch made pie started from fresh fruit, sugar and spices for the filling and the pie shell is made from flour, shortening and ice water.
No preformed pie shells or canned filling.

It means I got out a recipe book or my recipe cards and made the recipe from start to finish. And more importantly it means I am going to have a fantastic meal. And not some tasteless thing that came in a box.

Not out of a box or can. If I'm making enchiladas or something and I use store bought tortillas and cheese I would still consider it made from scratch.

In short, an example:
From scratch mean to me that I got out the equipment and all the ingredients to say, bake a cake with......as opposed to reaching for a boxed cake mix and mixing it in a bowl with an egg and some oil and water.....That's NOT from scratch.....Biscuits that you knead on a board and turn out and use a biscuit cutter to stamp them out, that's from scratch, NOT a can out of the fridge that goes POP when you open it and separate plates of some sort of nuclear dough and bake.......That's NOT from scratch, you get the idea.....Enjoy!!!

To me it means, making cake with flour, and other ingredients instead of using a pre-made cake mix in a box.
