i take zoloft for social phobia and ocd. social phobia has been with me since i was a kid, but was severely aggravated by becoming addicted to meth. (i've been clean for about three years now)
at one stage, it got so bad that i literally living in one room of my house. going outside was out of the question. i couldn't or even look out the window or answer the door and was spending most of my time sleeping underneath my bed.
combining the zoloft with cognitive behavioural therapy has helped a lot.
because the aggorophobia/social phobia it took a very long time to even get to the doctor as the doctors surgery was not a 'safe' place for me.
after trying a few different anti-depressants, zoloft was the one for me. the anxiety has gone. cognitive therapy helped me to recognise what my 'triggers' were and gave me useful strategies to help myself.
give it a go - but try with some cognitive therapy.

Zoloft, like it's cousins, Prozac, Effexor, and Paxil, are good for phobic and anxiety disorders, and also with depression. It all depends on your body's response to it.... from some it's quiet effective, for others, it's not effective. You should know within 3-5 weeks of starting. In addition, the dosage may need to be modified as your body adjusts to it. Overall, it may take time to tell, unless the side effect profile is severe, then a change may be necessary.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy, especially the group approach, has been the most widely studied and empirically supported psychosocial treatment. Pharmacotherapy with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), beta blockers, or benzodiazepines is also available, and can be very effective. But, Zoloft is a great starting point. Longer term, however, consider cognitive therapy so as to reduce dependency on meds.
Good Luck!

Most doctors prefer selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) drugs to treat depression and related disorders because of their low rate of side effects. Zoloft® (sertraline) along with Prozac® (fluoxetine) and Paxil® (paroxetine) are in this class. Even though all these drugs are used, Paxil, Zoloft and Effexor® (venlafaxine) all have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) specifically for social anxiety disorder. Often people with anxiety disorders such as social phobia also have depression.
I take zoloft for compulsive thinking, it works great for that too.

Social Phobia has the same cure as any other phobia, you have to face your fear. you have to come to terms with it being difficult for you to be around people but push yourself. A pill is only going to mask it a little but as soon as you stop taking it you are going to be right back at square one, and not to mention all the side effects. anyone can get through these disorders without drugs. you just really have to set your mind to it and be prepared to feel horrible, but eventually you will look back and say im so happy i did it.

It won't treat the social anxiety but it will treat symptoms of it. Mayby. Seek out a therapist who specialises in this area. Any help is better than nothing but ultimately the only cure is facing the fear itself.

Different for everyone im afraid. You will just have to find the best one for you. I went through all the SSRI's until i started on the tricyclics (older anti-depressants) before i found clomipramine (anafranil) that was amazing for anxiety and OCD.
good luck

each person is different. some may have good luck with zoloft and some may not. the only way to know if it will help you is to give it some time and see what happens.
