Max range is about 175 to 250 depending on what it is you are hunting. The 17 shoots very flat compared to a 22 long rifle. bullet drop at 100 yards is 2 or 3 inches where as a 22 depending on type of bullet is any where from 10 to 15 inches. However you will pay about 4 to 5 dollars per 50 round over what 22 long rifle sells for.

The 17 HMR is nothing but a necked down 22 magnum.
Since the 22 mag has more power than the 22 LR, you can pretty well be sure the 17 HMR will be a lot faster than flatter shooting than a 22 LR. The 17 HMR is considered the most accurate of the rim fire rounds. It is considerably cheaper to shoot than any center fire round but costs more than the 22 LR.
I would keep the better of the 22s, trade the other 22 for a 17 HMR. That way you can do your own comparison and with the 22 LR, you can always be sure of getting ammo.

The .17 HMR is a WAY better long range cartridge than the good ol' .22 LR. The .17 is a .22 Magnum necked down to a .177 cal. It fires a 17 grain bullet. It goes about 2500 f.p.s compared to the .22 LR, which goes only about 1280 f.p.s. The .17 can handle a wider variety of small game too. So definately trade in for the .17 HMR.

17 Hmr Max Range

Evaluations of the .17 HMR vary considerably depending on who you're talking to. I know people who insist the maximum realistic effective is 100-125 yards due to the wind's effect on the lightweight bullet. Regardless, the light weight of the bullet does limit its effectiveness as a varmint round. If your objective is to shoot varmints the better choice would be one of the high velocity .22 caliber center fire rounds. The cost of shooting them can be reduced considerably by reloading (dies and a single stage press can be bought very cheaply). Back to the .17, it's success may be its downfall. CCI currently makes a .22 Winchester Magnum with a V-Max bullet that seems to incorporate the best of both worlds. There is also talk of a .22 Long Rifle with a V-Max bullet being introduced. But ultimately, if buying the .17 HMR makes you happy, have fun.

.17 HMR shoots flatter and faster than the .22 LR. neither is any good for varmints, because it is a rim fire and doesn't hold it energy as far as say, a .22/250 or a .223. if you are talking about just plinking, use the .22LR. if you are hunting small game or attempting to kill a groundhog, get the .17 HMR.

While the 30-06 has the capacity to push similar bullets a little faster due to the larger case and will handle heavier bullets, The 308 is preferred in match shooting. When it comes right down to it, it's the shooter, and not the cartridge that makes a good shot. An accurate rifle will improve a good shooters score, a poor marksman is a poor marksman with any gun. Practice.

The .17HMR is most definately the winner over a .22 long rifle. I have a Ruger "Custom" Converted/Scoped 10-22 in .17HMR that shoots 1" groups at 160 yards. Shoots extremely flat and accurately. I love the .22 long rifle guns but the .17HMR just leaves them in the dust/ The .17HMR is a little more expensive to shoot. The ammunition costs about $4 per 50 rounds depending on bullet style you choose. Make the trade. You can find another good .22 most anywhere......
