Wondering if I could fill some canning jars 2/3 with water and place in the freezer, for drinking later. I have a freezer at work, no refrigerator and would love some ice cold water while at work. Would this be fine or would I crack the jars and make a mess?

I am doing away with storing my water in plastic. I have loads & loads of canning jars here so I thought "why not change over" :) I notice now how my Eddie Bauer plastic water container tastes different then water from glass. I have been storing water from our spring in plastic for years and am now realizing thats not such a great thing. I keep it out of the sun and all, but glass does seem better. So...I think I will fill my canning jars 2/3 and store them out of light then just pop in the freezer for a bit to get them cold. That should work, eh? Thank you all!!!

It should work as long as you don't overfill the jar, which it sounds like you are not.

The canning/mason jars are pretty thick. If they can stand up to boiling, then they should be able to take a freezing.

Use bottles from bottled water.. buy the water.. drink it.. save the bottles and fill the bottles 3/4 of the way and freeze them.

As long as you don't over fill them, it will be ok. Cold glass will be fragile though. You would be better off using plastic containers.
