Funny -- my P-doc diagnosed me.... and sent me to a therapist, who actually said I was the highest functioning borderline he'd ever seen/met/etc.

I think that the "industry" in general has a hard time accepting BPD as a diagnosis unless you're a raging aggro lunatic.

You'll need to find a good therapist who actually wants to treat you -- often they will avoid a BPD patient.

Email me if you want more! :-)

I wish that you would write more about why it is you feel that you have borderline. Then, I think that it would be easier to answer your question. You may have (without realizing it) dealt with a borderline parent, or boyfriend, or other. Maybe you are experiencing what so many of us have...when you are around it alot, you sometimes begin to feel and act that way in situations dealing with a borderline. Or, if you are afraid of abandonment or something, you may just have some unresolved abandonment issues from childhood. Sometimes people who were mentally, physically, or sexually abused as children, display some borderline characteristics. And you need to work through those issues with a professional in that area of expertise. Or, if you really do believe that you have Borderline and they are mis-diagnosing you...perhaps you are a borderline who doesn't "act out" hurting others. But, rather "acts in" hurting yourself. If you read a book such as "Stop Walking on EggShells" and you see that you are definitly the borderline. Try to find a therapist who uses Behavioral Therapy and is familiar with Bi-polar or Borderline disorder (Often Bi-polar people have borderline traits). The book I mentioned is an excellent beginer book. You will either see yourself, or realize that you are just responding to someone else who is borderline. Good luck!

Actually my therapist had some trouble convincing me. Of all the disorders I did and didn't want, this was definately one I was pissed about. But my therapist is usually right, and he was right about this.

Marsha Linehan, writes about Borderline Personality Disorder and the treatment of it. You might want to look up her books as a resource and possibly look for someone in your area who specifically treats the disorder.

Also, my therapist told me that in general Borderline is a disorder which is not diagnoised until a patient has been off of drugs or alcohol for at least six months or the patient has been stable for six months. A therapist would not diagnose you with a personality disorder after seeing you for just one time. So be patient.

Hope that helps!

Usually hun, a person with borderline personality has no insight into their illness. Their way of thinking and approaching the world is different from other people. Its not a chemical imbalance, its an illness that comes from the way a person was raised.
Its probably likely you don't have BPD and your therapist probably recognizes this. Instead of insisting that you have this disorder, why don't you spend sometime in therapy talking about things, and ask them for what they feel your diagnosis is.
But hun I work with people who have BPD and live in a group home. I also have a friend who's mother has this disorder. And trust me, the symptoms of it stand out. And its actually good if your therapist doesn't feel you have it. Because BPD is very hard to treat as it is not due to a chemical imbalance.

Why do you think you have Borderline Personality Disorder?

If you're "shy and you don't treat people in your life horribly" then you probably don't have Borderline Personality Disorder.

Do you have mood swings? Impulsive and risky behavior (like having sex with people you don't know, overeating, drugs, etc.)? Do you have people that you love one day and hate the next? Do you have persistent fear of people abandoning you? Do you cut yourself? Do you threaten to kill yourself if you don't get your way? Do you try to manipulate people into feeling sorry for you? Do you argue and fight with other people often? Are you bothered wiith your self-image and sometimes feel like you are not yourself? That's some of the criteria of the disorder.

I have seen a lot of people with Borderline Personality Disorder and they are very difficult people.

Also, if you go into treatment believing you have certain mental disorder and you are going to convince them what your have; well, that just doesn't sound right. Just go to your therapist and talk about whatever it is you need to talk about and stop thinking you're supposed to have this or that diagnosis.

I am wondering too why you think you have BPD - most people don't even know they have it until they have done so much damage to themselves, their families or others that they love or love them(as I have)...then if they are lucky enough to still be alive they are diagnosised. We are the hardest to treat - some therapists say they would rather treat any other mental illness than a BPD, because we just are so up and down and out of control. Please tell us more and make sure you get tested and don't give up - you probably are NOT BPD - from what your have written.

BPD is one of the hardest mental disorders to treat. I have it, and its he ll. I have had several therapist but there was only 1 that really knew what he was talking about and he really helped me alot. You may have to go through several different ones before you find the right therapist for you. God bless.

Talk therapy can be beneficial whether a person has a diagnosis or not. A good councilor should be able to help even without a diagnosis. However, if you think medication would be helpful, you may want to get a second opinion. But if you are concerned, it is right for you to continue to pursue the issue.
