It will depend on the lifestyle of the family the dog will be living with.. But based on experience, a labrador or a golden ret are the best..

I'm going to echo the others' sentiments: rescue a dog! Golden Retrievers are fairly big and are notorious for their good temperaments. Labs are also good for this. Great Danes are big sweethearts, usually. Check www.petfinder.org for big dogs in your area, then research the breeds that catch your eye. If you have kids, I'd explain to them first that you're going to try to find the right dog for your family, and that it will take a while. If you rescued every cute dog, you'd have a house full. This is hard for some people - especially kids - to deal with, but if you can have the kids with you when you make the final decision, it's best.
Good luck!!

Go get a mixed breed from a shelter. Oh, by the way, small dogs are not stupid. We have toy poodles (2nd smartest dog) & 3 mixed breeds from 16 lbs to 80 lbs. They are all very smart & after dealing with the morons that had them before, very well trained. My dogs behave better than most children. It's very annoying when someone that is clueless make such bias comments.

Lots of large dog breeds are good with kids and some aren't. But there are other questions too, like how big are your home and yard? How often will you be willing to groom the dog? Are you looking for an energetic or mellow dog? Try this website to help you narrow down your choices. If you find a few breeds to your liking than I highly recommend a mutt! I love mine!

The best kind depends on what you want. If you want a bigger dog, then you're going to need to take it on walks. My biggest recommendation is to get a mix. In my experience, they end up lasting a lot longer and have less health problems (even though their parents didn't seem to have any problems and weren't cross-bred--not that we could see.) A great family dog is a Golden Retriever, but they shed a lot so you'll need to brush them and sweep the floor everyday. If you get a Standard sized poodle mix, they typically don't shed, but then require grooming periodically such as getting shaved. I had a Black Lab growing up, and he was very sweet with us kids, but also a bit protective at times. He shed a little bit, but not as much as the Golden. Do some research and when you're ready to get a dog or puppy, look on www.petfinder.org.

I could name off dog breeds, but you will never know. You might find a dog of that breed that can't stand kids or find one that does.
Dogs, just like people, have different personalities. And if you want to find one that fits what you want, I would check out a local shelter. A good shelter will test their dogs for these certain things.
Even better would be a shelter that fosters dogs, they will be exposed to many things, including kids. You tell them what you are looking for and they will do their best to match you up to a dog that meets your standards. :)

Get to know the dog and train the kids to be nice to it. I would get a golden retriever but even a great dog doesn't want his ears pulled.
Labs and Dalmatians aren't good with children they don't take any guff.
Labs are good with anyone who owns a ball and will throw it but not toddlers climbing on it.

go to Petfinder.com, and do a search on dogs (that size), that are available for adoption, and that loves kids. You will find tons of them, just keep your eyes and your mind open to all breeds, and also all age.
Lots of great adult dogs, that fit your needs are available. And you won't have to bother with all of the problems of training a puppy.
A found of mine just adopted an adult Shar pei and Mastiff mix, and he's such a ham.

Make a few visits to your local shelter. One of those dogs is going to look at you, and you are going to see it's the dog your family needs as much as the dog needs you.
