It depends upon your driving skills. Personally, I'll take rear wheel drive any time. I grew up on rear wheel drive and I personally feel that it's easier to control in a skid than front wheel drive is.

FWD may give more traction in the snow, but NOTHING beats a set of chains on a RWD vehicle in snowy or icy weather. Most FWD cars cannot accommodate tire chains due to clearance and vibration issues.

There's a good reason why virtually every race car is RWD. It's easier to control at the limits of traction, pure and simple!

However, if you keep your speed down to a sane pace it really doesn't matter whether you're driving FWD or RWD.

Depends on your driving habits. Going down hill in a front wheel drive can be tricky in snow, but going up hill its great. Even if you are spinning going up hill you can steer in to the direction you want to go. Going down the rear end can spin you around and you're going up hill again. It's almost the opposite with a rear wheel drive. What ever you drive find a big parking lot in the winter and play around with your car and get a feel of how it is going to handle. My own personal preference for winter driving is front wheel drive with snow tires all the way around, even studs if your state allows it.

With out a doubt....Front wheel drive. I have owned everything from a Mustang GT to any number of front wheel drive cars, to several 4wd trucks. A front wheel drive will be much more reliable in slick conditions than rear wheel drive.
