How do you keep them together in the same house? Wouldn't the house be chaotic?

Technically speaking all animals are "enemies" just as I'm an enemy of the housefly. But just about any two animals grow accustomed to each other, they can get along fine.

When I was a kid, my dog Tiger was actually chased up a tree by our new cat Mitzy. After a couple of years though, Mitzy ended up dying and maybe it was just my perception from being a young kid, but Tiger actually seemed a bit depressed for some time.

Since then, I've actually even seen a nursing mother cat NURSE a pre-weaned puppy. (Cutest thing you could ever see)

No, there's no reason for it to be chaotic. I know people who keep both with no bother.

I had a cat for 18 years while a dog lived next door. They knew each other well. They used to PLAY at chasing each other -- which was clear, because they always let the other get away, and never hurt one another.

When I've had the dog in my hall and the cat on the stairs, and offered a little piece of chicken, they came up to me together and ate out of my hand, not bothered at all. They were pals. Now my cat is buried in my garden, beside the wall, and I found out recently that when the dog died, he was buried on the other side of the same wall. It's so nice.

This is a myth. All they need is a little time, space, and love of their own.

I have a kitten and a dog, and we have had the dog for about four years. When we got the dog, we had an older cat who didn't bother her too much. When the kitten came in, she defended her territory a little, but after less than a week were tolerating each other. Now they are pretty good, but once in a while there is a flare up (we've had the kitten for about a month and a half)... The dog and the kitten each have their own 'people' (I prefer the cat, while others in the house prefer the dog), and the kitten goes outside or hides when he needs space.

Just introduce them gradually, and they will be fine. And remember, Rome wasn't built in a day!

Best of luck

Cats and Dogs aren't really enemies.. Dogs are very social creature and will adapt accordingly....and after a short period of time the cat will come along. I have an older cat and when she was around 6 or 7 we brought home a little puppy and she was very upset at first but eventually she stopped being hostile. Now she loves the Dog very much...

Domestic cats and dogs don't know they're cats and dogs. If the alpha animal, the owner, teaches them to be friendly to each other, they will be. We have always had dogs and cats in the house and have never had a problem once they've been properly introduced. One of the dogs did eat my chickens, however. Multiple animal species often live well together even without human intervention.

Dogs and Cats are not enemies. They can and do co-exist in many homes just fine. The problem is usually the dog, a hunter, seeing a smaller cat as prey.

A well disciplined dog can learn very quickly that it can share a home with a cat. The cat will usually assume a superior role in the house (its just their way)

I've had several cats and dogs in the same house with no problems. They got along fine and even slept and ate with each other. One female cat I had gave birth to kittens. As she did this she brought the newborns out to our cocker spaniel for him to clean them up. Strange but true.

They don't have to be.

I have a large Newfi/springer spaniel mix, 3 years old and last year added a new kitten to our family. The cat just loves this dog and they play all of the time. Mickey (cat) runs up to the dog and jumps on him then runs away and waits for Mowgli (dog) to chase him. They have a great time together. They even slept together when Mickey was a kitten.

Depends on the temperament of the animals.

That's really not true. I mean, I know for a fact that s.times they don't get along, but they are animals, one doesn't prey on the other, they don't know the meaning of the word enemy.

I will say this though, it is MUCH easier to introduce a cat/kitten to a house of dogs than to introduce dogs to a house of cats. My old cat flipped OUT (seriously) when we got our 2 labs. She did NOT at all like that. And we hardly ever saw her, and when we did she was always in a bad mood and hissing at them and stuff.

Sorry Angel but that is a myth. cats and dogs can be the best of friends since cats pretty mych stick to themselves and dont particularily like the presence of a dog wanting to know where and how everything works and is... Believe me, your house will only be as chaotic as you allow it to be since a dog can be trained to calm down and since cats are antisocial, you have nothing to worry about.

Good luck!

Nope, my 2 dogs and 3 cats all get along great. Once in awhile one of the dogs will get a bit frisky with one of the cats and the cat puts the dog in its place and then all is quiet. They are domesticated enough to live with each other.
