Poke some holes in it w/ a fork. Rub a little olive oil on them, and sprinkle kosher salt on them. Wrap it in foil, and grill for 45 min. to an hour.

Wash it and scrub well, poke holes in it and microwave it for 4 minutes on high
then I take it out, slice it but don't go all the way through and put butter, onions, pepper and mushrooms in between the cuts,
then wrap it in foil and put on the grill for about 20 - 30 min, depending on the size of the potato

A whole potato is going to take forever on the grill. You might want to give it a "jump start" in the microwave, then finish cooking it on the grill.
I'd rub the clean potato with butter or shortening, poke some holes in it, then put it into the microwave until it's not quite cooked. Then I'd wrap it in foil, place it on the grill and finish the cooking.

Wrapping it in foil keeps it from drying out and burning. The length of dime depends on the size and type of potato. A white russet about the size of your fist will take about an hour. We never poke holes in it. One of our favorite things to do is to put 1 teaspoon of butter, 1/2 tsp of olive oil, 1 small sweet onion chopped, 1 clove of garlic chopped and 1/4 of a green pepper (we use an Anaheim with just a bit of heat to it), in with the potato wrapped in foil. Try not to put it right on top of a hot flame or coals. It is better off to the side or edge. You can use all of the ingredients or just the ones you like best. Experimenting is half of the fun.

im assuming u mean a whole potato...like a baked potato but on the grill? seal it in foil to form a packet and cooking time is dependent on ure grill type...at least 30 minutes id say..but its also potato size...so check it after 35 min
but if u want something tastier:
6 cloves garlic, minced
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons dried rosemary
1 teaspoon seasoned salt
1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper
4 large red potatoes, cut in 1-inch cubes

pretty sure you poke holes and cook it until tender, than you cut it in half, half way and add condiments like sour cream, bacon bits, cheese etc
