4 youths in Cranberra recently pulled off a trick of breathtaking bravado to gain revenge on a mobile speed-camera van operating in th area. 3 of the group approached the van and distracted the operator's attention by asking Q. on how equpment works and average cars caught speedin in a day.
Meanwhile.the 4th guy sneaked to the front of the van and unscrewed its # plate. They drove home and fixed the plates to the car and drove through the camera's radar just over the speed limit 17 times, as a result the automated billing system issued 17 speeding fines to itself ...

LOL! That is awesome! I wish I thought of that. I can't think of a better way than to stick it to the man! And to answer the question...it IS funny.

Wrong, funny, and an often repeated urban legend! I do laugh whenever I think of some stuffed shirt administrator getting a stack of tickets for speeding violations, from the unit that was supposedly speeding!

Now back to reality, bummer I know, the # plate is registered to a law enforcement group. The tickets ... while "valid" for speeding, Will probably be written off as "impossible" (how can a speed enforcement unit that is meant to be stationary ticket itself?)

Big problem ... are these fools stupid enough to keep the plate? That's possession of stolen property! A bust worth more than all 17 speeding tickets combined!

Want to try this at home? DON'T The plate will come back as owned by a LEA (Law Enforcement Agency) at most, a little paperwork will be generated, including a BELO (be on the look out ) for the vehicle wearing that plate (they don't just do a photo of the plate ... it's the whole front of the vehicle!).

Possession of the plate = possession of stolen property, official cop property that is. This is a sure cure for the "I don't know what I want to do today blues"! You will do what the correction officers say you will do, when they say you can, and you will act like you like it!

Great idea, but did the police pay the fines ? i hope so, Just wait till i see one of them vans at the side of the road, in fact we should get the number plates of all those vehicles in our local area and get a plate made up, then when we see one operating, we can nip round the block, swap plates and keep going through the camera at excess speed, this will really piss them off.

The only thing wrong is "breathtaking bravado" hardly exciting or an original event.

However, naturally funny, got to film for the driver of the van though, I'm sure he had it in the neck,

I think this is funny. A good prank. Yes they broke the speed limit but your story indicates that it was just enough to trigger the camera (about 5 miles p/h in the UK in 30-40 zone)

Well, they will find out the license plate and vehicle don't match, and the tickets will be voided. And the person driving the car with the stolen license plate will show up in the pictures driving the car and will be arrested.

Fantastic attitude everyone. Let's not bother with speed limits. Each time a kid is killed on the road by a speeding driver, probably drunk and on his mobile phone, let's just stick them in a body bag, shrug our shoulders and congratulate the driver on avoiding a speeding fine and a few points.

It's about as funny as somebody who's hungry or desperate going to jail for stealing. I'm sure the judge and prosecutor would be highly amused -- after the conviction, of course.
