She was a wonderful and blessed woman of God. However, she was not the "mother of God", nor was she a perpetual virgin, nor is she involved in any way in our salvation.
The adoration of Mary as the Mother of God (against Luke 1:46-49; John 2: l-5)
The esteeming of Mary as being a perpetual virgin - proclaimed by Pope Pius IX - (against Matthew 12:46, Matthew 13:55)
The esteeming of Mary as being sinless (The Essential Catholic Catechism, 129) - (against Romans 3:23, Romans 5:12, 1 John 1:10)
Mary is our spiritual mother (misapplying John 19:25-27 via Ad Caeli Reginam)
Salvation dispensed through Mary - (against 1 Thessalonians 5:9)
Mary's claim via vision to St. Alphonsus that she is "the door" in opposition to John 14:6 "I am the Queen of heaven and the Mother of Mercy. I am the joy of the just and the door through which sinners come to God." (Dictionary of Mary, 298)
"her manifold intercession [she] continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation." (The Essential Catholic Catechism, 172)
Mary as a intermediate to Christ (against 1 Timothy 2:5)
"Nobody can approach the Supreme Father except through the Son, similarly nobody can approach Christ except through the Mother." (The Essential Catholic Catechism, 214)

This is a point of confusion between Catholic Christians and Protestant Christians. The title "God-Bearer" was given to Mary (the Blessed) many centuries ago by the Roman Catholic Church. It was in response to much debate at the time about Jesus' divinity. Some people said that the moment Jesus was concieved within Mary, He was God incarnate. Others said the "God-ness" entered Jesus sometime after birth, perhaps during his childhood or the 40 day fast he went through, etc. In settlement of this question, the Pope (can't remember which one, sorry) declared that Jesus was always divine, even before His physical conception. When Jesus was a man, He was also God. When Jesus was a teenager, He was also God. When Jesus was a child, He was also God. When Jesus was an infant, and even an unborn child, He was also God. This made the Virgin Mary the "God bearer" by default, for she carried God within her womb. It isn't the container that is something special here: it is the contents. Catholics are not saying that Mary was a goddess bearing another god. They are simply stating the eternal nature of the Child she bore.

when I was growing up things were difficult between my mother and me.
when I walked into a catholic mass one day I saw this most beautiful statue of mary. Now, I didn't know the teachings of the Catholic church at that time. I was only 13. But I knew in my heart that Mary was Jesus' mother. and Mary loved Jesus. And Jesus loved me (cause the song says so LOL.)
so my 13 year old brain put two and two together and said Mary loved me too! And if my real mother couldn't give me the love I needed then Mary, the mother of our Lord could. and ever since then I have had a special place in my heart for her. I talk to her daily just like she was my own mother. I ask her to pray for me.

Though I'm not a Christian, I respect the Bible a lot. Just as Jesus symbolises the Greatest Sacrifice; Mother mary represents Total Surrender to His Will. She's the embodiment of Pure Virtue & Compassion.
If you consider Jesus as your Saviour then, Mother Mary is the Saviour's Envoy who holds Infant Jesus in her arms just for you to be able to reach Him easily.

She has been chosen to mother the infant jesus. That itself differentiate the noble and innocent Mary from others. That the spirit has chosen her as mother itself is a great recognition of her motherhood. There may be billions of mothers. But the chosen one is the best in the eyes of God. What more we can add than revere her and worship her for her love and innocence.

I'm not catholic, but if you are talking about Mary the mother of Jesus then I think she was a pretty great woman. Hypothetically if all of it was just history and Jesus wasn't the son of God then she should have been stoned when they found out she was pregnant and she wasn't. Joseph didn't have to stay with her but he did anyway. She watched her son grow up, learn, teach others, and then she had to see him killed on a cross. In addition to all this she had to raise the rest of her family. All in all she had a very remarkable life.
For me, I know that she was the mother of the son of God. That in itself is enough for me. She was an amazing woman.

I am not christian but I respect christinity. I love JESUS because of HIS compassion. Here I have gone through the answers and found that some are praising MARYAand some are not..... For ME whatsoever She is. SHE was a MOTHER. And I think that we are here the people assembled from the different religions but all respect our own Mother.
Thats why SHE is CERTAINLY a RESPECTED LADY being the MOTHER OF JESUS. I bow before HER and I respect HER. WE HINDUS RESPECT OUR MOTHER VERY MUCH.
Those who are not showing respect towards HER means that they have no respect for their own mother....

What does Mary the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ mean to me in my life? That is one of the biggest questions I have ever been asked. She is honored and respected in my life. I look to her for guidance. I cannot even fathom what she went through to do God's will, and yet she did it with love. Would or could I have watched my son be crucified for the rest of humanity -- I do not think I could do that. In fact I know I could not do what she did. She had a faith and strength that exceeds all women. I ask her daily to pray for me, my family and loved ones. Do I put her above God? No. Did God put her above others? Yes, she was the earthly mother of his son. I cannot find enough words to explain all she means to me.
Peace be with you.

Protestant Christians do not call Mary mother Mary. She is the young lady who was chosen by God to be the earthly mother of Jesus. She needed a savior like anyone else. She was not a virgin all her life, nor is she to be prayed to. There is one God and one mediator between God and man....Jesus Christ. Mary said that all generations would call her blessed and so she is; she found favor with God. Other than that, she is not to be worshipped or bowed down to. Only God and His son should be worshipped.
