taxpayer dollars for a day laborer center to provide illegal immigrants with employment services says a temporary center will open by the end of this month while city officials contemplate two possible sites for the permanent location.

When frustrated residents complained that unruly illegal immigrants were ruining their neighborhoods by littering , urinating on walls and sleeping under their porches, D.C. Councilman Harry Thomas offered a costly solution to be financed by the victims—law-abiding taxpayers.

He convinced his fellow lawmakers to earmark $500,000 to create a day laborer center, complete with a multicultural facility, restrooms and free job training for those who have violated federal U.S. law by entering and living in the country illegally.

I think they would be in violation of the Immigration and Control Act of 1986.

"(C) knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that an alien has come to, entered, or remains in the United States in violation of law, conceals, harbors, or shields from detection, or attempts to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection, such alien in any place, including any building or any means of transportation; or

"(D) encourages or induces an alien to come to, enter, or reside in the United States, knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such coming to, entry, or residence is or will be in violation of law,

shall be fined in accordance with title 18, United States Code, imprisoned not more than five years, or both, for each alien in respect to whom any violation of this subsection occurs.

By building his "day labor" center, he is harboring and encouraging illegal aliens. He is providing a place to seek work which is an inducement.

I am sure that the city would want to take a don't ask and don't tell policy but ignorance is no excuse. In effect, he is asking the taxpayers to aid and abet criminal aliens.

Since when is enforcing the law not an option?

I am sure that if it were prostitutes roaming the streets that the police would know what to do and the city would not be building a brothel to accomodate them.

Civil_av8tr makes a very succinct point. Totally agree

Iwannarevolt must surely be joking. Immigration fees are intended to do no more than pay for the costs expended by the US government in processing immigration applications. As a legal immigrant I do not object to paying those fees. BTW, no-one said anything about American culture being better than anyone else's. Personally, I think my culture (Scottish) has much to commend it but I also enjoy many aspects of life in the USA. The asker was merely asking for views on spending money for the benefit of illegal immigrants to solve a problem caused by those immigrants. It is illegal to work in this country if one is not here legally. So what the center would do is encourage criminal acts. One could just as easily advance the argument that drug dealers should be provided with a center so that they can peddle drugs away from schools and street corners.

You know, they wanted to do this in a town in New Jersey. They had the building and were all ready to renovate it. Now, NJ is a tolerant state, very strong on supporting individuals and letting people get on with their lives. Well, the local population were in uproar over the plans and it was swiftly ditched. If a place like NJ can act like that, what does that tell you?

No way. This illegal idiots need to go back to Mexico. They already know that littering and urinating on walls is wrong and building a center for them is not going to make them stop. It will only encourage more of them to come over here and that is what we are trying to stop. WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!!

No, I do not! Put that money back into the educational system or toward a hospital's deficit due to them using the facility without paying for anything.

no I think that that would be better as a facility that citizens should be able to use. plenty of homeless that could benefit from a facility like that and give them a start to get back to living a productive life.

It seems to me that you have something against multiculturalism. What is it that makes YOUR CULTURE(ie, American Culture)SUPERIOR TO OTHERS?

Personally, I'd be MORE WILLING to allow this anyhow since they'll be able to get a job that pays enough for the laborers to send back to their families still in Mexico and for themselves to put away enough to pay the excessive and unnecessary processing fees that play a part in illegal immigration so they can become legal citizens. Wow, you really have something against giving someone who has ONLY come into this country for a chance at a better life and has DONE NOTHING TO YOU. Smacks of xenophobia if you ask me.

Social D also has a point about the homeless, so maybe they could combine the services together that way the illegal immigrants and the homeless both can be benefitted and can have a chance of a better life.

I would regularly attend the council meetings and be one of those pain the the %%% that constantly demanded that the councilman paid for it out of his own pocket.

This is not going to be the answer you wanted, but read it anyway.

I would be happy to spend the money. If it keeps just TWO illegal immigrants out of prison, it will SAVE money! Also illegal immigrants save a lot of money for rich people, including Republican politicians, who use them for gardeners, nannies, chauffeurs, etc. etc.

I don't think "laborer" type of jobs need training.

Go there.
Get that.
Put it there.
Repeat.
