When a person's thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone, they are usually given a pill that contains thyroid hormones. There are several different types of these pills, and some people find that one type works better than another. Thyroid hormone pills are not dangerous for someone who needs them, and taking the pills is usually a whole lot less dangerous than not taking the pills.

Some of the symptoms you have mentioned might go away after taking the hormone pills for a little while. The thyroid gland is located around your throat, and it can cause swallowing problems when the gland keeps trying to expand to produce more hormone. The gland won't need to work as hard now that you are taking hormone pills. An underactive thyroid gland also can cause inflammation and joint stiffness, so maybe this will improve as well.

Good Luck!
