There are several rulings.
1) The pregnant, weak, sick , elderly , While a woman is nursing, During a womans period and children are not mandated to fast at all. Instead if they wish they can pay a certain amount of charity instead of fasting, but must have a legit excuse.

Things that can break your fast:
1) Not having the proper intention (fasting for anything but Allah i.e.. dieting).. Is not counted.
2) Deliberate eating
3) Tasting anything
4) Getting a shot, or anything that allows something to enter the body
5) wearing makeup (lipstick) which can accidently enter a womans mouth
6) sex before sunset.. or before the fast is over
7) Masturbation
8) Seminal fluid that comes while delibrately thinking about sexual desires
9) Anything that allows you to taste something after sunrise

Things that don't break the fast but make it Mukroo (decrease the amount of reward)
1) Lying
2) Swearing
3) Yelling
4) Cheating
5) Listening to Music
6) Watching things that are vulgur on television

Basically, we have to give up all worldly desires.

Basically the point of Ramadan is self control. The believer Must try his best to obstain from all these things. The fast lasts from sunrise to sunset, During the Maghrib prayer. Which is the 4th prayer of the day. It is the sunset prayer. The fast is broken at that time while saying a certain du'a or prayer before eating. The person must have full intention for doing this only for the sake of Allah. In Ramadan everything we usually get the deeds for, the deeds recieved are increases.
The Devil, or satan is locked up during this holy month which means no one can have the excuse of saying that they must have been tempted by the devil
The doors of hell are closed and paradise is open for any believer that dies during this month.
The Quran is read especially so in this month... Althoug this kind of devotion is expected through the whole year, because we have to worship Allah all our lives, not just during one month.

If you have any other questions.. like why masturbation breaks the fast.. here is a article I found on it. http://qa.sunnipath.com/search.asp?request=things+that+break+fast+in+ramadan&cat=0&index=%22d%3A%5CIndex_Store%5CQNA_Index%22&fuzzy=Yes&fuzziness=1&stemming=Yes&phonic=No&natLang=Yes&maxFiles=25&sort=Hits&HDCat=3&cmd=search&SearchForm=%25%25SearchForm%25%25

I'm an atheist, married to a Muslim, and with Muslim kids. My husband and the two older kids are fasting. I try not to eat in front of them, and help to prepare iftar (the meal with which they break their fasts). I think it's good for them. It takes a lot of discipline, and they all lose weight, every year, during Ramadan. They have some extra weight to lose, they're not starting out overly thin from the beginning, and won't be when it's over. I would consider fasting, too, but I can't because I'm diabetic and just can't go 14 hours without eating. Islam forbids fasting for people whom would be adversely affected by it (sick, diabetic, etc.).

The holy month of Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calender. Muslims believe that during the holy month of Ramadan God revealed the first verses of the holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Ramadan is a month filled with blessing.
Muslims during this month fast, which basically means no eating or drinking until sunset. Muslims get up early for 'Suhoor', a meal etean before sunrise. Then they abstain from food and drink til sunset. After sunset the fast is broken usually with dates and water.
At many mosques during Ramadan, about one thirtieth of the Qur'an is recited each night in prayers known as tarawih. In this way, by the end of the month the complete scripture will have been recited.
Fasting serves many purposes. While they are hungry and thirsty, Muslims are reminded of the suffering of the poor. Fasting is also an opportunity to practice self-control and to cleanse the body and mind. And in this most sacred month, fasting helps Muslims feel the peace that comes from spiritual devotion as well as kinship with fellow believers.
Ramadan ends with a festival called 'Eid-ul-Fitr'. Eid al-Fitr is one of the two most important Islamic celebrations (the other occurs after the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca). At Eid al-Fitr people dress in their finest clothes, adorn their homes with lights and decorations, give treats to children, and enjoy visits with friends and family.
A sense of generosity and gratitude colors these festivities. Although charity and good deeds are always important in Islam, they have special significance at the end of Ramadan. As the month draws to a close, Muslims are obligated to share their blessings by feeding the poor and making contributions to mosques.

Eating, drinking and sexual intercourse are not allowed between dawn (fajr), and sunset (maghrib). During Ramadan, Muslims are also expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam by refraining from violence, anger, envy, greed, lust, angry/sarcastic retorts, gossip, and are meant to try to get along with each other better than normal. All obscene and irreligious sights and sounds are to be avoided. Purity of both thought and action is important. Thjkgyce fast is an exacting act of deeply personal worship in which Muslims seek a raised level of closeness to God. The act of fasting is said to redirect the heart away from worldly activities and its purpose being to cleanse your inner soul, and free it of harm

During Ramadan, we don't eat, drink, smoke, chew gum, or let anything pass our lips (except if you have to take medicine by necessity, are breastfeeding, or have health problems like blood sugar that would keep you from being able to fast) from sunrise to sunset. Usually, we may eat a big early breakfast, and in the evening, we come together to eat communally at Masjid, or at each others homes.

From what my parents saw when they were living in Cairo: Eat as much as possible from evening until dawn, eat nothing during the day, and come out of ramadan 10 pounds heavier.
