I'm not talking so much about Y!A, I expect it on here. I'm referring to the lack of basic grammar and spelling in the 'real' world such as resumes and formal communication. Will it just continue to decline until we're reading a cover letter saying, "i'm jus want da job cuz i qulifyed nd iz edumicated"? WTF?!

Not only does it make the individual look like a complete moron, I won't take someone seriously if they communicate with me like that through formal channels.

Because education standards have steadily declined over the years. We have all heard about students being pushed through the school system. Well, it's true. Not many educators seem to take the job of truly educating seriously anymore. Everyone is afraid of failing little Johnny because the parents might object. If we don't go back to holding children responsible for their own actions things are only going to get worse.

The steady decline in grammar is a result from the steady incline in television, video games, internet and free rides. The US population is so lazy these days. On top of the fact that there is such a shortage of school teachers to teach our children properly. When children go home, most parents don't make sure their children's homework is done AND correct. They don't try to study with them and help them. The American public has also become lazy and uncaring. They don't care if they sound like idiots. As long as people understand what they say, it doesn't matter. There is no drive for students to get into college and make something of themselves anymore. They're looking for the easy way out. Decline in grammar is just the beginning of the depression the US will see in probably 30-50 years. JMO!

Beth, I must agree; good grammar has been on the decline for decades because of the laxness of teaching, lack of student comprehension, and motivation to learn.

The Internet forums have simply taken third-grade levels to the bottom of the grammatical pit, thinking that the abbreviations and shortcuts are clever (not cute), witty, and elevates the authors to a level of acceptance.

It is often frustrating to answer a question posed in such a degraded fashion that an English grammarian would faint at its reading.

What is the solution? Aha! There lies the problem. We can't say "education" because that has failed along with the student.

Meh who needs to be taught proper grammar now when you have word and other programs that help people out. No they do not catch everything but they soon will and learning grammar will be obsolete. I wouldnt pay attention to anyone if they wrote like that on their resume either. But as for not putting a comma in the right place I think that stuff is all bull and dont care one way or another if an appilcant can spell or use grammar right if it is not required to do so on the job.

I totally agree with you and hear what you are saying. I think its because folks lack education this present day and just don't care about being ignorant when it comes to grammar. Bad grammar has got to be one of my biggest pet peeves. I am sure it also has to do with pure laziness too and the fact that a lot of people drop-out of high school.

I know I use short grammar when texting so I can fit more words in the 160 character limit my phone gives me. But in an e-mail, there is more room and you can hit spell check! I am trying to keep my daughter from falling into this habit, I believe I have my work cut out for me! I personally don't like Ebonics either, but that's just me!

Well when we as a society keep watching reality TV or Roseanne, Dukes of Hazard - is it any wonder our intellect is equal to a dust ball. WE worship Paris Hilton while calling Bill gates a nerd.

'puters r mking it all a joke. Don't u c?

Actually language is defined by the people who use it. In less than 100 years there will be no more perfect tense. Remember having to know what shall and will are?

Interesting point and a BIG problem in the real world.

I recently read where text messaging is partly to blame, plus the whole urban slang/music scene...as in: U B jiggy wit my train o' thought?

Anyway, it drives me nuts when people cannot spell...let alone are too damn lazy to use something as simple as "spell-check".

Mine's improved since I picked up a copy of "The Transitive Vampire."

Wish they'd taught grammar like that when I was in school...
