I'm 19. Is it too late for me to learn guitar and acquire any skill? I took it for a while when I was 14, but then couldn't continue lessons. I write songs and I want to be able to write music for them.

Nineteen is a great age to get serious about guitar. Get it out of the case and put it somewhere in your field of vision so it can tease you and tempt you when you aren't holding it and playing it. Learn a new chord everyday, and play that chord with at least one other chord until you can move back and forth smoothly. Get lessons if you can, or at least learn from as many people as you can. Everybody has something to show you and nobody approaches guitar inexactly the same way.

Only practice on days that end with a "Y."

Only practice on the days that you eat. Feed the body, feed the mind, feed the soul.

Practice what you are going to play. Practice makes permanent. Don't practice mistakes over and over, thinking you are going to fix them later. Practice what you are going to play, isolate it if you have to. Play it as slow as you have to and pick it apart if you have to. Then put it back together, speed it up gradually and put it all together again.

Good luck on your quest. Give me a shout if you need anything!

At 19, you're still young enough to grasp the particulars of guitar playing and exhibit maturity while doing so. You do realize you won't be playing well enough in a week's time or even a month unless you devote all your spare time to practice and learning.

I began at age 16 and lived it every day. I still learn new things--or things I've forgotten through the years. Although I've been at it for over 50 years, guitar playing is still a challenge and a delight.

Go for it!

p.s. Thumbs-downer: Would you care to elaborate in a message to me?

19? Too old? I thought you were going to say you were 50 or something. 19 is young. Even 50 isn't too old.

Go for it, girl. You are still plenty young! My husband just started learning at 41, and he's doing great, but best of all, he's really enjoying it.
