while you are correct the word pope is not in the bible - neither is cat or rapture so....
you had some wonderful asnwers about Christ & Peter, here's another thought - in John 14 Christ is explaining how those that beinve and rely souly upon Christ being in the Father, He too will be in them. religious leaders ar to be in Christ in all things - they are to be able to give their lifes wholly and fully to Him.
in 1 peter chapter 4 it's said that one who ministers to others should do so based upon God being with him.
1 corinthians 12:
"25": That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.
"26": And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.
"27": Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
"28": And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
"29": Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?
"30": Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
God has granted people various gifts - those os being a great mom or dad, brother, aunt, etc. He has also gifted many with a calling to lead and teach.
i don't understand why all the hubbub with the pope.... the church of england, protestants, COGIC and all other forms of organized religion have a leader a head of their denomination- even those within the first baptist church have a head of their organization.... the papacy has just been around longer.

The position of Pope was established by Christ and the office has been maintained in an apostolic manner since the time of Christ. The word "catholic" means universal. Jesus created one universal church for all of mankind. The Catholic Church was established by Jesus with his words spoken in Matthew 16. Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" The disciples then offered various answers - "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." But the question that Jesus then asked was crucial: "But who do you say that I am?"
The answer provided by Simon Peter set in motion the formation of the Catholic Church by Jesus. "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." With this answer, Jesus established the Catholic Church with Simon Peter designated the first Pope.
"Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

I don't know if it says there has to be a pope, and as for the people following him I think they either choose to or someone started that habit a long time ago. They probably stated that the people had to follow the pope when they first decided there was gonna be a pope.

Gah. Thank you. The pope acts like he's God or something. He acts like he knows everything there is to know about the Bible. I'm a non-denominational Christian and I honestly can't stand Catholicism.

The idea of a Pope came from the Mithra religion's Papa. Nothing in the bible says one is required. The catholics decided it had to be done to maintain control of the weak minded.

Jesus said:
This is Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church.
Pretty straight forward to me. Peter is the first head of Jesus' Church.
Jesus said:
Whatsoever you bind on earth I will bind in heaven; whatsoever you loose on earth I will loose in heaven.
Talking to Peter and the disciples Jesus puts the authority to do what is necessary in his (Peter's) hands. Thus if Peter felt that a Pope was necessary then that position became a reality. Pretty simple stuff when you learn it.

JB,
There is no Pope named nor spoken of in the Bible. Nor is the Catholic Church actually named or spoken of in the Bible. Most of the Catholic Church doctrine is man-made by their leaders. Have a nice week.
Thanks,
Eds
.
EDIT...
New Catholic & JP,
Read beyond what the Catholic Church tells you to read. There is much more to it then that.
Thanks,
EDs

John 21:15-17 states:
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."
He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."
He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.
Matthew 16:17-19 states:
Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah.
The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.
The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.
The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing.

With love in Christ.
