the bumps started poping up around a year ago, they feel like a big tick but when you look through the fur they look like scabs.....except they're round and smooth. they don't seem to bother him, sometimes when I touch it. Any ideas?

From the descritption they sound like papillomas, benign warts that wont really cause a problem unless they are traumatized and bleed. Since they have been there a while its unlikely they are cancerous but without a biopsy of some sort no one can really say for sure.

They're little white/skin colored bumps at first about 1/4" across? Then scab up, then the scabs fall off & that bump is gone but more appear?

I just answered this for another guy a few days ago. We had that happen with ours, they'd scab up and then the scabs would drop off and new bumps would reappear elsewhere. It took a while to figure out what it was, and I had to ask over on another cat list.

We narrowed it down to a specific food which had caused it to happen suddenly with the three cats who had these reactions. The manufacturer was tweeking the ingredients, and had moved up the rosemary extract from the bottom line way up to the third line from the top in the ingredient list. This is a natural preservative, but by putting MORE into the food, it caused this reaction in a small percentage of cats.

The cats who got the bumps were highly allergic to the rosemary extract and kept getting bumps till we switched foods to a different type with the extract way further down the list. The bumps went away. When we put them back on the original food, they got the bumps back again.

I'd suggest switching food, looking for one with less of the extract. It sounds like your cat is allergic to it same as ours is.

You should take him to the Vet and let him take a look at those bumps.
Cats, especially older ones, are prone to cancers. This could be skin cancer. Or they could be benign (non cancerous) tumors.
Then again it could be an allergy.
The Vet might want to do a Fine Needle Aspirate. He'll stick the bump with a needle and sees if there is any liquid in it, and he can analyze it under the microscope.
He might also wanna do a biopsy.
Good luck!

Does he groom and/or scratch that area frequently? Are they bumpy like scabs? Is the cat losing some hair in that area?

My cat developed a flea allergy when she was 9 and so she was constantly grooming & scratching her back area, causing herself to lose hair...took her to the vet and they knew right away that it was a reaction to fleas. Feline advantage really helps keep it under control.

It's flea season.

Get a flea comb and comb him. If you find black specks, brush them off onto a damp paper towel and wait 15 minutes. If they appear to be bleeding or rusting, you've got fleas.

Some cats are allergic to flea bites and they get those sores.

Other than that, I'd take him to the vet for analysis. Actually, it wouldn't hurt to do that anyway, as you'll want to get medication from them if he does have fleas.

hi

it could be due to flea's but being as he is also very old maybe you should take him to the vets and get him checked as sometimes they can be tumours and nasty things like that. so make an appointment even if he seems well in himself still go to the vet.
