Hi Guys, how can i stop him? I have tried saying 'ouch!' and turning away, replacing my hand, arm or leg with a toy but he still nips and even growls a teeny bit. We are going to training classes and he is so good, but just lately he does get a bit out of hand... funny thing is it's usually when my husband is around, when i am alone he is as good as gold and does as he is told. Any tips??

All puppies go through this stage and usually outgrow it with proper training, but it's important that you get your dog on track now, because in the future it could be disasterous given his size. When you say ouch and turn away, try stopping playtime altogether, for at least 20 minutes. Ignore the dog during this time, and if your husband is around tell him to ignore the dog also. He needs to learn he isn't pleasing you by his behavior, and your refusal to pay attention to him will show that you're unhappy. Don't keep replacing part of your body with a toy - just stop the play session. Letting him continue the nipping is only teaching him to keep doing it. Never physically tap or smack him - these methods are often seen as an aggressive game by the dog, and could further escalate his unwanted behavior. Also, never resort to spray bottles or shaker cans, as they will only teach him to be afraid of you and not trust you. If all else fails, ask the trainer at your puppy classes for advice or other techniques that could curb the unwanted nipping.

My husband usually raises his voice and tells him no and he stops...for a second and then he is back at it.....i asked my vet because i was concerned about all the stuff i hear about the breed...he said this is all natural development he is just showing you that he loves you and wants to play with you...Now this should stop at a year old so im just waiting hang in there girl!!!

Ignore him if he nips,if you say ouch you are letting him know hes stronger than you,if he nips playtime is over, dont play again unless you initiate playtime and make sure you decide when it ends!

This is a natural part of his development, asserting his character and finding his place in the pecking order of your household. You have to be firm, really firm.
It would be good if he had a puppy pal to play with to help his proper dog development. Is there anyone from your training class that you can arrange play dates with?
