The Iraqi people want to remain one country.
It is interesting how it seems that it is the conservatives who gave the Iraqi people the ability to choose how they are governed - and it is the liberals who want to dictate 'solutions' to them.

Why three, rather than two or four? The Kurdish region is already autonomous, and steps have been taken for a referendum to extend its territory beyond that imposed by Saddam. The problem is that in the provinces adjoining the Kurdish region there are Assyrians and Turkomen as well as Kurds and Arabs. Partition between Shia and Sunni, though suggested, is impracticable, because of the mixed character of the areas, particular around Baghdad. An institutionally Islamic state would be undesirable, not least for its impact on Christians and secularists. Of course, the Kurds in Turkey, Iran and Syria have the same right to self-determination as those in Iraq

Based on the most current war game scenarios done by the U.S. Army, if we leave now a defacto separation is what would most probably happen. In the short term it would be messy since the areas in which shia and sunni now live in together would have to become either shia or sunni. What Turkey will do in regards to the kurds is up in the air. Overall its probably the best of some really bad options.

It's dead simple. When a pack of dogs want to fight out a new pack leader situation, you do not get in the way. Someone in Iraq may wake up one morning and realise that is the situation they are faced with.
If Iraq wants a civil war, who gives a damn? Not me! Let us just pull out with as much dignity as possible and let them get on with it.
It gets worse. I now learn that most of the Middle Classes in Pakistan now support al Qaida. They foolishly think they will be left alone if they do this. They are scared stiff. Truth is that al Qaida is an Arab lead terror organisation which simply does not include any other race. If you are not an Arab, then according to the al Qaida rules, you must shut up and do as you are told. You are a second rate person with no rights, not even those given to you in Sharia Law. Well, the bad parts, such as cutting off limbs and being stoned to death in the market square. These remain, but your daughters will not be educated and must marry whoever they are told to marry by the local al Qaida war boss, but only after he has ensured they are virgins first, by the tried and tested shagging method.
Pakistan is now descending into civil war [conflict]. One mob wants to get rid of the military and the military wants to get rid of the mob. Meanwhile, al Qaida are supporting and supplying anyone who will cause as much mayhem as possible. Gonna be lots of suicide bombings in the coming days and weeks ahead. It's already happening.

I think there are already 3 states, English, American, and the Kurds, The states need to be made up from those that live there. Then with proper government management they could be very rich states indeed.

I don't think it will work. Turkey will stake its claim to the Kurdish lands, Iran will stake a claim, and so will Saudi Arabia. Maybe in five-ten years you'll see those three countries fighting for control of Baghdad, or maybe Baghdad will just be a pile of rubble.
A real Kurdish homeland would cut into part of Turkey's territory, one made only out of Iraqi land would probably complicate Turkey's internal politics.

The problem is that fighting between who will get what resources and the various demarcation lines would lead Saudi Arabia (Sunni), Iran (Shiite), and Turkey (Wanting to get in on the action) to start supporting the various groups. I wouldn't be surprised if those 3 new countries were annexxed by the larger ones.

What a good idea! Email it to George Bush. Three countries, one for the Shia's, one for the Sunni's and one for the Kurds. Why didn't Blair and Bush think of that! Having said that, they would promptly invade each other, and each one would want to have their bit include the oil. Oh, well!
