I'm using a ring net at Pacifica Pier fishing for crab. What is the best bait? I am currently using the tentacles of a squid and a salmon head as bait. I've used that bait for about 2 days from now. Is the scent gone or does the scent increase with every use? Also, what is the best bait COMBINATION. I know chicken is widely popular, but what can be combined with that to make it even more powerful?

yup, you need fresh bait. Believe it or not, past a certain point, even a crab won't eat spoiled food. I always used fish. I usually keep the rest of the fish after I fillet it, then freeze it. Place the still frozen bait in and secure it to the trap. As it thaws, it puts out a contstant trail of fresh scent. Toss it at the end of each day (or as I preffer night). Crabs eat what they are used too. FISH!!!

I've never known any of the SE Asian people I used to fish with to use anything else besides plain old chicken during the dozens of times I've been crabbing at Pacifica Pier, and the Municipal Pier and Pier 41 in San Francisco, but they did insist it be fresh. I tried pork once, just because there was an old chunk left in the freezer, but with little success.

I don't think it's fair to ban someone if it's their first offence, but if this is the second time they've eaten all the bait, I would consider it fair treatment
