Many Roman Catholics don't even understand their own faith. They are too blinded by what they have been told & haven't done the slightest amount of research to know that the Roman Catholic church will be the leading force to bring about a one world religious system. The Pope has already made claims to Muslims & other faiths that we all worship the same god & that we should end conflict. Pope John Paul II even went so far to kiss the Quran. I'd say that the "official" answer to your question is that they don't pray to Mary. I'll add as much to say the Bible forbids praying to anyone other than God the father through his son Jesus. Any dead person who lived on this earth can't & won't answer or even hear a prayer made someone still living.

OK, I've grown up Catholic and have attended and Catholic school all my life. It is a very complex thing to understand but I think I finally have got it down.
We honor Mary, and pray to her. However, we do not worship ANYONE but God (The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost). Mary is the virgin mother of God, therefore she should be held in high regard and we should honor her. There is a common misconception that we as Catholics WORSHIP Mary. This however is not the case. We pray to her and ask for guidance... but that does not mean we worship her.

The second response is correct. We ask Mary to pray for us.
Unfortunately, many Catholics do not understand their own faith or the teachings of the Church. This causes problems because they spread misconceptions about Catholicism.

Catholics are big on Prayer,
We can pray directly to God, we can pray to/through Saints such as Mary as well.
We are showing reverence to Mary and following what it says in the bible, "All generations shall call me blessed" It is in the Protestant bible also.
That does not mean that Mary is our Redeemer or that we worship Mary as God. Look at the Wedding in festival where Jesus turned the water into wine, why did he do that even thought it was not yet his time? He did it because his Mother Mary, asked him to. Do you honor your Mother, do you tend to listen to her? Why would Jesus not listen to his mother?
We are asking Mary to intercede on our behalf, we do not have to, but we want to honor Jesus, and I can't imagine Jesus being mad for us giving his mother honor. NOT worshiping her, honoring her.
Hope this helps.
Peace be with you!

Both
To love Mary takes nothing at all from Christ,
but honors our Blessed Lord by Whose grace she is who she is: His greatest creation, the greatest of Saints, the Queen of Heaven, the Immaculate Conception, the spotless Virgin, the Ark of the Covenant, the New Eve, the mother of God, and the mother of Israel
-- our mother who wants nothing more for us than to pray for us and show us her Son.

Both.
Prayer to the saints is simple communication like asking them to pray for us. This is not worship.
The Communion of Saints is the belief where all saints are intimately related in the Body of Christ, a family. When you die and go to heaven, you do not leave this family.
Everyone in heaven or on their way to heaven are saints, you, me, my deceased grandmother, Mary the mother of Jesus, Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II.
As part of this family, you may ask your family and friends living here on earth to pray for you. Or, you may also ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Andrew, or your deceased grandmother living in heaven to pray for you.
For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 946 and following: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt1sect2chpt3art9p5.htm#946
With love in Christ.

Both, because the word "pray" has multiple meanings. It means 'entreat, implore, to make a request in a humble manner.' It can also mean 'to address God or a god with adoration, confession, supplication, or thanksgiving'.
http://mw1.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pray
We pray (request) that Mary pray (address God) with us and for us.

It can be both presently; depending on one's attitude. One may pray to Mary to act to intercede for themto King Jesus. (scriptural analogy; Bathsheba going to King Solomon for Adonijah; scripture?).

this is a very good questions and also one of the most misunderstanding even among catholics themselves. i mean we ask our blessed to pray for us is simply i ask my closed brethren to keep me in their prayers. it is ABSOLUTELY not right that we pray to our lady as we only pray to God our father, the son and holy spirit.
Thus the main fault lies when we catholics have to be very careful and not make it a habit to say pray to mother mary, pray to saint pio etc. No, it should it saint pio, please pray for me to God for my godmother's restoration of her health.
