Okay, I live in California. I recently had an accident and owe the hospital thousands of dollars. I have been paying on my account every month and have never missed a payment. Well today the hopital told me that they wanted me to sign a contract stating I would pay $200 a month. I told them I could not afford $200 a month. So to make a long story short they said they were going to send my account to the creditors even though I have been making consistent payments every month. Can they really send my account to the creditors are they just trying to make me pay and higher payment?

I agree with Spifiman

If you have no agreement with the hospital for payment or you fail to keep an agreement, the hospital is not obligated to keep your account out of the collectors hands.

I just wanted to add that you might go in person and speak with the hospital.
Hospitals generally have lists of different charities that help those who have financial difficulty in paying hospital bills. Plus you may be able to talk the hospital down on the amount owed.

Just keep doing what you are doing. Hospitals are notorious for saying and doing things like you described. I think they CAN turn it over to a collection agency, but most DON'T.

My parents owed and paid a little bit monthly, on hospital bills for my youngest sister for over 18 years and were never turned over to a collection agency. As long as you pay SOMETHING every month, it is doubtful that you'll have a problem.

Yes they can.

And once it gets sent to collections it will show up on your credit as a collection under the public records section.

You would be better off finding a way to pay the $200.00 a month.

If you are not making payments on time or consistently or even at a certain percentage of the balance then yes they can.

It has been my experience as long as you are paying them something every month there is really nothing they can do. If they continue to press the matter, hire you an attorney and sue them for harrassment.
