It's been closed for decades. Urban legend has it that the loopies from Brooklyn (Kings County) were shipped out to what was then the country, and housed in these large warehoused psych centers. I believe some of the buildings may still be open so that the last few remaining patients who probably have spent most of their lives there can live in peace.
it's not a scary place, it's actually in a nice area, very quiet, surrounded by residential homes around 40 years old. I used to know a family that lived near there, and they used to say that the neighborhood teenagers were scarier than the center's patients.

I'm a current Long Island resident. Last time I went to KPPC, I went around dusk. We just drove right in, parked in the parking lot, got out of the car, and walked around the grounds. You can't go into the buildings, because there's deadly asbestos and lead paint inside. But it's totally safe outside, just creepy as hell. If you go on a windy night, it even sounds like people are screaming, making the whole thing even creepier! Just DON'T go inside, it's very dangerous inside of the building. But there's plenty to do on the outside. There's some areas you can't go into, but there are so many that you can. If you want another place to go, I highly recommend Sagtikos Manor, in Islip. It was built in 1697, and before that, Native Americans lived on the property. There's a graveyard dating back to the seventeen or eighteen hundreds, and a very large house, and extensive grounds. All of these places, especially the graveyard, are said to be haunted, more so than most places on Long Island. There are several ghosts apparently residing. However, you cannot find a lot of this information on the internet, so feel free to email me via this yahoo account if you have any other questions!

The big brick buildings have been closed since the late 80s. There is still limited service in small buildinngs along the camp grounds.
