In the city where I live in Illinois, firefighters work a 24 hour On / 48 hour Off schedule.

Hope this helps.

Most large cities the day starts at 8 a.m. and you stay on duty (available to go out on a job), not unnecessarily awake, for 24 hours. Then you are off for 48 hours.

Unless you're an arsonist, I cannot figure out a way to schedule a firefighter's work.....

there are a couple different schedules out there- here are a few I've worked and heard people tell me about...
24 on, 48 off (56 hrs/wk
24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 4 days off (think M,W,F, then Sa, Su, M, T, off, W, F, Su. on, etc. ) (around 56 hrs/week)
My favorite, Baltimore's schedule- 2- 10 hour days, 2- 14 hour nights, 4 days off (42 hrs/week)
Keep in mind we and the police are exempt from overtime laws until we hit 56.25 hours a week. (Thanks, U.S. Dept. of Labor)
Most of these, you will work 6-8 rotations and get one off for vacation- now that always rocks (I personally get 12 days in a row off every 7 weeks.)

It depends on where you live and their scheduling policies. They don't typically follow a 5 day per week schedule for any shift.
