Most people would say the salon. And I agree that it is probably a faster road to skin cancer. But.. if you are talking about a one time shot I'd have to go with the sun because recent research has shown that the human body heals faster and more completely when it receives a higher dose of radiation (obviously still within the manageable levels) than a lower because it doesn't see the low dose of radiation as that much of a threat.. so it doesn't come through and work on fixing the damaged DNA as quickly. This is just my opinion based on an article I read on ScienceDaily

The least dangerous way is to either stay out of the sun entirely or use a broad spectrum uva-uvb, PABA-free sunblock, strictly according to directions, when you do go outside. I would ask your dermatologist you his/her suggestions for your skin type.
The tanning salon and the sun are equally dangerous, no matter what the hype may say. Many years ago in our city, I used to see a woman with a very, very deep tan, but she looked "ancient". You could tell at one time she had been very, very beautiful. I have no idea how old she was or what happened to her. Sun tanning really ages the skin and will make you old before your time. So do you really want to look young and tan now or risk being not so old and looking really old, tan, and maybe have skin cancer later in life? I made my decision when I was about 25. It was one of the best ones I ever made.

salon is worse! It's basically a cancer box.
Just try self tanners, or spray on tan at the salon.
