music, friends, my cat, myself

hope that things get better? I KNOW that things get better cause I will make sure about that!

I had depression only once, but I got over it, and see, I'm an atheist.

my point of living is to live and do my best :D

I feel sad for you if the only point of your life is an invisible sky daddy

I think that we make our own purpose, by searching through science, and art. I feel that religion is a thought process rather than a truth, so I have 'faith' in humanity. In a way I have no comfort in the thought that there may be a superior being, as it just makes no sense. It is empowering as an individual and a race. I still believe in morals etc. I am open minded but God has not been a reality for me and I have no desire to believe. I am cheered up by people, of any belief, by art, by music, by daily creations. Depressing situations are always there for us all, whatever we believe in, but I don't think I feel more lost because I am an atheist.

My life has purpose- in fact I would say life has more purpose for atheists because you only have your time on this earth to make a difference. You can't just go around molesting children and then ask for forgiveness to go to the happy heaven in the clouds. How you behave now is going to affect humanity for generations. That is my purpose. I don't need to believe in the KJV to feel a sense of purpose and to do the right thing for my community and for humanity. What cheers me up? Adopting a rescue dog. Dancing with my infant daughter on my hip. Planting a tree. Eating jello. I mean, the world is full of beauty. Do you really only think Christians enjoy life? I am just sad and confused that you really think this. Does logic never enter the picture? Just think for a moment. Think.

Speaking as someone who DOES suffer from depression, I can tell you that in researching the disease there is no one particular group that suffers from it. The percentages are pretty even across the board...with the slightly higher rates actually being among the more rigid and conservative religious doctrines.

Our mindset is that we are the ones who give purpose to our lives. No outside force needed to decide for us. We give meaning to our lives. You are the only one who seems to feel there must be a "point" to life.

No purpose or intent? Where do you get that idea? My life has lots of purpose or intent it just wasn't dictated to me by someone else. I have hope that things will improve when I am in rough times based on my experience that I have the ability to make choices that can improve my situation and based on past experience that rough patches happen to us and they pass. I get cheered up by music, literature, family, friends. I believe its up to me to make my life as positive an experience as possible and live in such a way that the consequences of my actions tend to have more positive rather than negative results although some things in life just happen and you have to deal with them. Maybe also I am just a naturally happy person. I have as of yet never suffered from depression and I hope that I won't.

No I don't think we suffer from depression more than other group out there. However, we are human and we'll have our good days and we'll have our bad. Sometimes I can find it deep in myself and get up and move on and then of course, there are your loved ones and friends who can give you support.

Not every atheist believes that life has no purpose, it just doesn't have the same purpose as those who view it from the mindset of various religions. Everyone has the right to give their own life its own purpose.

Just the opposite. Most Atheists are far better off financially, they need no crutch- of -superstition. They have confidence in themselves. When they're in need, they find that study and work gets you a lot more than prayer.
Our point of living is living. We don't live to die and go to this fairy-tale heaven.
If you want to see depression, go to some of the West Indies Islands where the people are unbelievably poor, and unbelievably religious.
Please don't feel sorry for the religion-free people at the top. It's the super-religious downtrodden ,starving people at the bottom, who should forget good fortune through praying, and get to work.

Atheists don't think that life has no purpose. The majority of scientists are atheists or agnostic by some 70%. What would be the point in bettering themselves if there were no point to life? Very few free thinkers suffer from depression as they aren't under the delusion that if they lead a good life, say their prayers and go to church that god will reward them with a worry free life. Atheists know that life is of their own making and most of us do very well for ourselves.

Dear, lindsey p,
Honey, we don't go to church for that purpose. It has nothing to do with someone telling someone what to believe.
Its coming together to Praise and worship God. And teaching that is encouraging for us helps us to try to be the best person we can be and its something you wouldn't understand until you find it for your self.
And another thing consider the little baby growing inside a mother or your self in that matter Every little strand of DNA was perfectly proportioned. You are someone with a purpose more than going to work breathing and being a mommy. and for us Christians its to live the best we can and be a good example to show that its is possible to get through life in victory and to give God all the Glory. Its simple some times but other times its quite easy wanting to give up and church is our way to get a refresh start to face it week to week. I don't know if its possible to understand that sometimes I can confuse but sometimes religion is that way.

life has no intrinsic purpose or intent, save for the blind reproductive forces of nature. See all the sex everything is having all the time for evidence.

But as a self-aware agent, that means I am free to choose whatever purpose I want, bound of course by the conventions and laws of the societies and time I move in.

I have found many worthy short- and longterm goals. I might not get around to all of them, but that's ok. You can't always get what you want, or hadn't you noticed that. I'm here, this planet is freaking fantastic and weird and beautiful and cruel and quiet and everything you want. And that is just a very, very small part of the larger universe.
