Family of 4, two daughters 15 and 10. We have a boat, but are looking for something different this year and we are going in October! We want to drive rather than fly. We like the beach, but with having a boat, we are thinking of going to the mountains for a change. Anyone with good suggestions?
Also, we prefer to hotel it, NO CAMPING on this vacation

I absolutely love Santa Barbara. Great town with shopping and activities. You are surrounded by both the mountains and ocean.

One of my favorite spots in So. Cal is the area around Montana de Oro State Park. (here's a link: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=592 )Mountains, yet right on the ocean. Pretty uncrowded for So. Cal. Nearby is Morro Bay, Cambria, Hearst Castle, San Luis Obispo and related wineries. Plenty of stuff to do for a week.

Sometimes can be foggy or windy, but it's a great area.

There's a cool B and B I've stayed at called the Baywood Inn near Montana de Oro; if you go make sure to get a bay view room. I believe several of the room arrangements would work well for your family. I do recommend you stay on the top floor for the most privacy. You go to the restaurant next door for breakfast; they also have wine and cheese there in the afternoon. I believe all the rooms have fireplaces, dining tables, microwaves and fridges. Baywood is a very laid back little town that seems like time forgot. http://baywoodinn.com/welcome.htm

If it wasn't so late in the season I'd also recommend Mammoth but it'll be pretty cold by October.

I've never been to Idyllwild in October but I'm guessing the temperature will be cool then but probably not as cold as Mammoth; you can check I guess. The Tahquitz Inn would probably work well for your family ( http://www.tahquitzinn.com/ ) Not sure where you live in LA but Idyllwild would probably be the shortest drive.

Good luck in planning for your trip and remember to have fun.

San Luis Obispo and Cambria and Cayucos and 2nd. choice Pismo Beach. There are so few in Norcal-not worth mentioning. Of Course San Diego is the mass Media choice but above will be more memorable.

I would suggest the Arrowhead Hilton in Lake Arrowhead Village. They have 257 rooms; pool, whirlpool, boat dock.
