Sometimes I watch my 3 yr old and my 9 months secretly to see how my son acts towards her when I'm not around. Iwas wondering if anyone else does and if so what do you witness usually?

Yes, frequently. I have three boys and I love to "peek" in on them when they are playing for two reasons . . .
1. because it is so cute and rewarding to see the bond between them (I do speak up and give them positive reinforcement when I see them playing together nicely) and
2. to make sure they are not doing something that is going to hurt someone. They are very active boys and sometimes, when it is quiet is when you need to worry! That usually means they are up to something they are not supposed to be up to!

OF COURSE I DO! I don't call it "secretly watching" them though. I call it supervising them. I know what you mean though. I don't let them know that I'm standing there. I'll observe them for a few minutes. If they are playing nicely, I make my presence known and commend them both for being so well behaved and playing nicely. I'll usually go put the dishes in the dishwasher and come back to see how they are doing. Of course I catch the occasional "that's mine" or "I had it first", but it ends quickly. I try and let them work it out on their own. If it turns into screaming, hair pulling and pinching, I step in. Otherwise I think its good for them to get into little squabbles and work it out themselves.

Hope that answered your question.

oh heaven's yes... There is nothing more peaceful than watching your children playing nicely together. I have noticed that when I am "not looking" my kids seem to play better and take care of one another as opposed to when I am "looking" when they try to compete for my attention... but too... at 3yrs old, they don't understand that the baby isn't being mean when taking a toy, the baby simply hasn't learned how to share yet... which can create a situation that could become sticky... so I wouldn't leave them for more than a couple minutes together.

Sure! For me, it's a 4 year old and a 15-month old, both girls.

I see 2 different things...one (my favorite) is when I see my older girl help or tickle or try to calm the baby all wtihout my prodding. It's awesome.

The other is when I see the older try to get away form the baby's grasp. That's more typical big sister behavior, I think.

Sometimes, I confess, I'll peek in through the door at daycare to see how my 4 year old acts with her friends after she thinks I left. Ic an't do this with the baby because if she saw me, she'd have to have me come to her.

I have two children ages 4 & 5. I love watching them together when they think I'm not watching, it is soooo funny. I like watching them work out thier own problem without having to run to me for everything. It makes me fee like they will be okay later in life to solve thier own problems. It also lets me see how much they do love each other.

yes i do and it gives me a real picture of their difference: personality, interest, attention span, values etc. Also their similarity as boys; they both love cars, video and computer games, tv show- cartoon network, disney channel, nickelodeon and national geographic.Of course, another reason for watching them secretly is for reason of safety. They might be playing with matches, sharp objects, medicines that we did not know was left lying around the house etc.

I have always done that. Still do and they are 13 and 14. I think they play together beter when they don't know they have an audience. They aren't competing for YOUR attention, so they are just good to each other!

i love watching my children play together. my son is almost 4 and my daughter is a little over 7 months. It's so cute to sit back and watch him sitting in his chair playing with her toys with her while she's in her walker. often i'll see him grab one of his toys to give her so that he can have one of hers.. (that's our rule) and they seem to interact better when no1 is around (mainly the toddler, she doesn't really care) but he tries to calm her and watch her without anyone saying anything to him. He's actually more mean to her when we're around. I guess it's b/c we give her a little more attention b/c we're tryin to work with her crawling and stepping. my boy is a great helper with her, and he'll go behind her after she throws her toys across the room while sitting in her walker and pick them up and give back to her. another thing i've noticed is that he loves on her more when "nobody" is watching. he kisses her and hugs her.. and he is so protective of her... (not related but a funny thing.. when some1 says they're going to take his sissy home with them - just jokingly - he gets all puffed up and tells them no you can't have my sissy she has to stay with me.. he has even asked if he could take with him to his daddy's house - they have different dad's im currently with my daughter's father)

yes , when my son was growing up i often watched him secretly . it gives good clues to how a child is interacting with others and how they are develioping socially.

in the case of my son i saw often he would hang back and watch others at first and was a slow starter at interaction socially so i learned to work on his interaction skills more as a result. just one example.
