Twenty years, 2 months, 1 day. US Navy. Five ships (USS Tutuila ARG-4, USS H.W. Gilmore AS-16, USS LaSalle AGF-3, USS L.Y. Spear AS-36, USS Nimitz CVN-68), 6 continents (including 13 months in Antarctica)(didn't get to Australia), 8 oceans/seas, 32 countries(some more than once) (stationed in 3...my family was with me in 2). I've been as far west from Virginia as the Gulf of Siam(aka Thailand); as far east from Virginia as Pakistan; as far north from Virginia as Nova Scotia; as far south from Virginia as Antarctica.
Worked in financial, warehouses, storerooms, supply support for fast attack subs, did open purchasing, taught & trained lower rank sailors...and one junior officer...not only my rating, but also my collateral duties, spent almost a year on permanent Shore Patrol in Sardinia. Was a DJ, the base newspaper reporter/editor/publisher/printer, & had a country music band in Antarctica. I can go to 6 countries and not have to stay in a hotel. I still keep in contact with 4 people I met around the world (Israel, Kenya, Sicily, Taiwan...got a phone call a few years ago from Lo. He found my phone number and just called one afternoon). I picked up several languages and could carry on limited conversation. I have made many friends while in the Navy and 3 still come to visit, and I keep in touch with several others via cards/E-mail/associational websites.
Because of my naval logistics back ground, I am a gov't contractor working with foreign navies. When our Navy decommissions a ship, sometimes a foreign navy will buy it. I've been working with India since November. They bought the USS Trenton LPD-14 (do a google search on it). They are buying another ship of the same class this fall.
Would I do it all again? You can believe I would.

Yes, joined the US Army at age 17.
It was a good experience for me.
Joined to go to Desert Shield, turned into Desert Storm when I got there. Was on the M1A1 Abrams tanks. Had a great time being stationed in Germany for my first enlistment.
Became the Training NCO, Mail Clerk, EO Officer,NEO Representative and Single Soldier Initiative Representative. 1st Sergent Driver, Colonel's Gunner.
Re-enlisted and went to California and worked in the S-2 Shop. Transferred to Supply and work the Arms room for the last two years in.
Loved my time in the military.

Yes I have.

Elaborate how?

I was a Cav Scout (19D) for 8 years. Honorably discarged in 05 as an E-5

While in Iraq I acted as an MP as part of a PSD team.

I did 4 years active and my last 4 were National Guard.

The G.I. Bill helped me imensely graduate from college just this past May, so now I'm working in the corporate world.

I still miss the military and kinda wish I stayed in sometimes, Not the work so much, althogh it was alot of fun, but the people I worked with is what made my service the most memorable.

I served in the United States Air Force, in the mid to late 1970's. We played the Cold War game, with the Russians and it was a very interesting game. I was in communications, which took on many forms. I operated an old style telephone switchboard and ran high speed communications computers and teletypes. I was also in radar and approach control. When I wound up my time in service, I was in communications security. I was a courier and in charge of classified information. All the time, we watched the Russians and they watched us. Many times, we tracked Russian Bear bombers as they flew just out of Canada's airspace. But, that was then, and this is now. I hope ya got the answer you were looking for. Thanks for asking.

Yes, the Marine Corps. Stationed in California at Camp Pendleton. Was a chief battalion personnel clerk. Then went on special assignment for almost three years. Best four years of my life. I was so proud to be a Marine!!! I was lucky to have good officers and excellent assignments.

Here is an example of how the Marine Corps works: when I was on my special assignment in Morocco, I could travel anywhere in the world but could not go back to the US until my assignment was finished. Didn't bother me, but I thought it was a little strange.

When I went into the Marine Corps I was a bit of a wimp. Five foot nine and 132 pounds. Just barely made it in. But I was able to take all they could dish out to me mentally and physically. (not bragging) It really helped to make a man out of me. Plus, I got a free college education when I got out.
