I pulled a review of "Teen Witch" by Silver RavenWolf. An excerpt is below.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In the very beginning of the book, she states that she is "-one of the most famous Witches in the United States today" as a way of introducing herself to the parents of a teen who is investigating Wicca. This statement may be fact, but it is not the way to make the readers comfortable with the material.

The thumbnail description of Wicca is necessary, and it gives the reader a chance to define what they believe. By the third chapter, despite saying that Wicca is a religion over and over, she goes into Magick and Spells, continuing this topic for the next 8 chapters. Spells on this, spells on that, how to protect your locker with a spell, how to shop with a spell, how to gain money with a spell, never again focusing on the religion.

"Teen Witch" is just... gah. I could barely read it, it was that bad.

Here's the article I usually refer to when trying to describe to people just why Silver Ravenwolf is not a good source on either the basics or the ethics of Wicca:

In my opinion, she's responsible for a whole lot of people getting off on the wrong foot when entering the Wiccan religion.

Silver Ravenwolfe is one of the WORST sources a new pagan or Wiccan can use. She is more concerned with the hype associated with wicca rather than the seriousness of the actual religion. More than once I've cautioned people to stay away from her works. The citations you're pointing out are just a few of MANY examples.

The Wicca confusion has been around since the beginning, every Wiccan believes something different, we're united in the fact that our beliefs are different from each other's. Silver Ravenolf has many good discussions in sevral of her books about the religious nature of Wicca and the practice of magick. I haven't read that particular title yet, but in several others she gives examples about how living a magickal life is living a spiritual life.

Most Wiccans I know who are serious about their religion reject Silver Ravenwolf as not worth reading, and in some cases outright damaging to Wicca.

Unfortunately, she has slick marketing covers and churns out books en masse, so people who are just starting to learn about Wicca are far too likely to pick up one of her pieces of drek and think that's "what it's about".

They usually end up getting a rude awakening from other Wiccans the first time they say, "Well, I read in 'Teen Witch' that you should do this..."

The books of Silver RavenWolf is published by Llewellyn Publications.

Llewellyn Publications is in general way out of favor with the Pagan community.

I think you have found the problem. Where do we write her to complain?

I knew there was a reason I never read one of her books!
Commercialize and cash in...that's what it's all about!

it is because there is actually nothing from history that would make Wicca a religion.

In case of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, or whatever there are always "sacred" texts that exist and don't change over centuries. They teach the followers what to do.

In case of Wicca there aren't any texts that existed for hundreds of years, there is no Wicca practice that is standardized.
