I am asking in terms of logistics and economics. I will be here for a conference and would like to go into the city for the night. I will have a rental car, but I would prefer not to drive if I don't have to.

You can catch the "dinky" (a small 2 car train) from the princeton campus to the "real" NJ transit North East Corridor line that goes right into NYC (just followthe crowd when you get off the dinky, they are all going to NYC). It is around $20 and about 2 hours depending on when you go (some times like rush hour have express trains)

You can take the New Jersey Transit train from Princeton straight to Penn Station in Manhattan. It's about a 2 hours trip, and shouldn't cost more than $15 or $20.

It's really easy to take the train in from there. You can take a NJ transit or the Amtrak, which have trains running very frequently. You can park at the train station and just hop on the train. Have fun!
