It depends, first off check you tire pressure, low tire air pressure can do alot, also the air filter. it may not look to dirty but depending where you drive your jeep it can get clogged quickly, for us it would be like running breathing out of a straw. Have you ever run fuel injector cleaner in the jeep? You need to, the injectors can get cloged just like a shower head with hard water. Get a tune up, new plugs and wires cap and rotor. Your jeep is not a gas hog like some people would say and the I6 Jeep engine gets about 20mpg on the highway, thats not bad. The I4 like you have is at least 8 points off what it should be. Go to your local tire/lube and tune and spend some cash to find out whats wrong before anything else. It could easly be a bird nest in your air cleaner. Good luck

have it checked out, a 4 cyc will be working harder than a 6 cyc, but that still would not create that poor of mileage, I know I do considerably better in my wrangler which is a 6 cyc. I would guess I am getting somewhere between 14 and 22 MPG with no modification done on mine.

that is the biggest problem with jeeps. do a complete tune up. the 4 cylinder in a jeep is over-worked so you get poor mileage and the 6 cylinder is larger so ofcourse it gets less mpg. my girlfriend had a 4 cyl jeep and got horrible gas mileage even when it was new.

do you have a lift with big tires? does it run unusally hot? these can contribute to bad gas mileage. I get 12 to 14 miles per gallon. I have 33" tires and a 4" lift.

have you had a tune up lately?? maybe adding B-12 to your gas tank might help in cleaning some things out...(i use b-12 at least once a month...it gives me 24-26 hwy miles/21 city..i have a 1990 volvo.. 231,000 miles and still going strong.
what kind of tires do you have...sometimes that effects gas miles..

If the mileage wasn't this bad when you bought it, try giving it a tune up. Check all filters, plugs, and wires.

Take it to a good repair shop and get it checked for a bad oxygen sensor or maf sensor.
