My martial art may teach a different concept behind it, but here is what I know:
A Roundhouse kick is done in a whipping/snapping/swinging (Depending on your interpretation or Martial Art :p) motion. You lift your leg, turn your body with your hips (With your leg pointed in opposing kicking direction [Right leg up, your leg is flexed to the side, and is pointing in the left direction]).
In some styles, the lifting motion (Sometimes known as a "Chamber) of both the side kick and roundhouse kick are the same, which is where I think may be where you are getting confused.
But anyways...
The Side Kick
Now when you do a side kick, lift your knee up (As I said), turn your hips and body to the side (Do not snap your leg out like in the roundhouse), and instead of whipping your leg into what would be your opponent, you do a straight pushing motion. When you've turned 90 degree away from your opponent, you are pushing (And with later practice it becomes more of a thrust) out.

That's a roundhouse kick. Notice how the body is turned, and the kick comes from that hip angling.
This is a side kick:

Do you see the difference? In one, you face your foot towards your opponent, and in the other you are pushing them away with a straight thrust?

First of all your not kickboxing your doing aerobics.Second if you can't tell the difference between the two, the person demonstrating the technique has no business showing people how to kick. The difference between a round house and a side kick is a round house is a circular kick ( hint the word round) A side kick is a linear kick going in a straight line away from the body. The problem is that your doing aerobics don't worry about technique or what the kick looks like, your just trying to get a workout not defend yourself.

In a roundhouse kick, you kick with the top of your foot (using the inside part of the foot, like kicking a soccer ball). A sidekick uses the outer edge of your foot. A roundhouse is usually given while facing the front & a sidekick is given while facing sideways. At least this is what I was taught in karate & I took it for 4 years.

a roundhouse is like a sidekick but when you kick your leg out, the knee on down does an extra move. It goes in a circle counter clockwise. It is hard to see these dimensions on videos. Hope that makes sense

Western Kickboxing was originally known as Full Contact Karate. North Americans and Europeans developed the style in the late 1960s with an emphasis on safety so they banned the knees, elbows, and headbutts that are permitted in Muay Thai. Muay Thai or Thai boxing is known as the art of 8 limbs, and it is a much more brutal fighting system originating in Southeast Asia. Its cousin is Burmese Boxing (Lethwei), which is in many ways as brutal as Muay Thai.

The round house is a circular method or technique of attack. The kick comes around and you literally try to pull your foot across or through what you are hitting and you use primarily your hamstring and your quads as well as your calf muscles when executing it. The part of the foot you are making contact with is either the upper instep of your foot or the ball of the foot. At the end of the kick you retract your heel back around to your butt and then set the leg down. It is not very difficult to learn since you use these same muscles every day walking, running, and going up and down stairs.
The side kick is a straight line method or technique of attack and is a pushing action. For that you use your groin muscle in conjunction with some ligaments and tendons in your knee, hip and quad and upper hamstring to execute it and most people find it awkward since you don't use those parts very much in everyday life. The part of the foot that you make contact with is either the heel or the outside edge of the foot. Oftentimes beginners tend to throw their side kicks like round house kicks because those stronger, more dominate muscles take over along with the lack of flexibility in the groin and make it come around rather than straight out to the target. When you retract it you pull it back and underneath to the side of your knee of your base leg-not back around to thefback of your butt of your kicking leg.

they are the same except a roundhouse you curl your toes in trying to touch the ball of your foot and a sidekick you point your toes backwards(facing towards you)

your leg comes out more and they are usually a lil higher than sidekicks and are better for head kicks, sidekicks which usually are kept lower and the motion is generally straighter..
